Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning skiers and shredders and Nordic gliders. The snow level bounces around between “too high” and “just low enough” for the next week or so, but there won’t be much precipitation. This includes at least a couple of totally dry days early next week. The extended forecast continues to look good with colder weather arriving sometime between the 4th and 7th of January and wetter weather arriving sometime between the 2nd and the 6th. Generally speaking, it looks like we’ll start picking up snow the weekend of the 7th. Two-week probabilities are… 25th percentile: 16”; 50% percentile: 23”; 90th percentile: 55”. Definitely vote for the 90th!

Thursday starts off cloudy and adds some mixed precip or wet snow in the afternoon. That switches to drizzle overnight as temps rise. The snow level will be 5500′ during the day and 6500′ after midnight. Just a trace of wet snow is forecast today, and just a trace of rain is forecast overnight. Wind will be S or SW 10-20 for the 24 hour period.

Friday is a special day: Meadows plans to open the new Mt. Hood Express lift and also plans to open Shooting Star. What will the weather be? Cloudy with a chance of a little drizzle, of course! The snow level will be 6500′ in the morning, 9000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. Just a trace of drizzle is forecast, and hey, at least it will be warm – temps push near 40 in the afternoon. Wind: S 10-20 early, S 15-30 midday, and SW 10-20 overnight.

Snow, yes snow, is forecast on Saturday. Just a bit, but hey, it’s not rain, and it’s not nothing! The snow level starts at 5500′, drops to 5000′ mid-morning, and slowly falls to 3500′ after midnight. About 0.1” to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast. Call that 1-2” new snow. Wind: SW 10-20 all morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and NW 10-15 after midnight. Sunday looks sunny with the free air freezing level around 4000′ Wind is forecast to be light all day. Models generally call for a couple more dry days after that before we (FINALLY) transition to colder, wetter weather later next week. Have a great day!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! We have a couple more days of easterlies before the wind turns light enough to knock (most of) us off the water for several days… or at least sends the paddlers to the boat basin for dock starts and flat water practice. But not today, and not tomorrow! Thursday starts with pressures of 30.10/30.22/30.24 for east gradients of 0.12 and 0.02. Stevenson and Viento started the day with 16mph. The Iwash (Rooster) sensor was down, but I’d guess it’s 35-40 there. Expect Stevenson to build to 25ish, maybe a touch more and Iwash to drop to 30-35 mid-morning. Afternoon wind drops to 20-25 at Stevenson and 25-30 at Iwash. River flow yesterday was 95-131kcfs, river temp is 45F, and high temp forecast is 44F.

Friday will be much windier, and it will also have some morning drizzle. Expect 35 at Stevenson to start the day with 50 at Iwash. Afternoon wind builds to 35-40 at Stevenson and 50-55 at Iwash. High temp: 45F under high clouds. Saturday starts with 15 at Stevenson and 20-25 at Iwash. The wind turns calm in the afternoon. High temp: 47F under mostly cloudy sky. Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck about Ferment Brewing.

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
