Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning! You probably noticed that the website was down for a couple of days. That was because I forgot to pay the bill. But it’s a good reminder that this forecast and this website have costs. And it takes me over an hour each day to put together this forecast. Please take the time to make a donation above. If you’re here, this is important to you. Without your support, it can’t keep going. It’s only here because of the generosity of those who support it. So please, before you read the forecast, scroll back up and shoot me a contribution via paypal (twomirrors@gmail.com) or Venmo (@thegorgeismygym). You can also send check or cash via USPS: Temira @ PO Box 841, Hood River, OR 97031. Thank you for your support!

It’s sure a good start to Thursday out there. Pressures are 30.02/29.96/29.80 for gradients of 0.16 and 0.06. We don’t have the offshore high pressure we’d like in a cooldown, but that isn’t making a difference at this point – we’re sticking with solid westerlies all day. Same tomorrow: strong wind all day with a more stable setup. Westerlies continue in the low 20’s (probably) through the weekend before ramping up again in the Monday to Wednesday timeframe. Set your sights on early to middle of next week for The Cooldown You Are Looking For.

Thursday kicks off windy, windy enough to be distracting while I write the forecast. Westerlies start at 26-29 from Viento to Swell with mid 20’s in Hood River and 14-17 everywhere else. Westerlies fill in at 26-30 from Stevenson to Mosier this morning. The Lyle to Doug’s stretch rises to 22-25 late morning. East of there, we’ll have 14-17 from Avery to Arlington. Models have the wind dipping to 22-26 this afternoon from Stevenson to The Dalles with continued 14-17 east to Arlington. That said, models do tend to underestimate the wind near Maryhill with this particular setup, so be open to a Wall/Rufus/Amayah’s Indian food cart session this afternoon. Actually, I changed the chart and decided to write 18-23. Ha. River flow yesterday was 223-236kcfs, river temp is 63F, and high temp forecast is 80F.

Marine clouds pile into the metro area on Friday morning, and high pressure builds offshore as the day progresses. Expect Dawn Patrol at 25-29 from Stevenson to Arlington. Models hint at an eastward shift midday. At that point, you’ll find 26-30 from Mosier to Arlington with 22-25 from Stevenson to Hood River. Don’t be surprised if the wind chooses to ignore the models and sticks around in the Corridor; a weak stabilizing cap is forecast to hang around all day on the west side. After 5pm, the wind dips to 23-26 in the locations previously hanging in the upper 20’s. High temp: 74F.

Saturday looks warmer and sunnier all across the land, but strong offshore high pressure could have reality exceeding the models. Dawn Patrol: 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 to the east. That 21-24 holds all day and eventually spreads eastward to Lyle, Rowena, and Doug’s. High temp: 81F.

In a fun twist, temps push towards 90 on Sunday but models hold on to the wind, especially in the afternoon. Why? Strong offshore high pressure and big thermal gradient as the desert temps soar late in the day. It’s gonna be a great day to be on the river! Looking to the start of next week, we have ensembles all on board with big days Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday also caries the potential for strong wind, but the signals aren’t quite as clear. Whew. That’s a lot of windy days. I don’t know about you, but I’m starting out sore and not seeing a rest day!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! I heard a rumor yesterday that GoFoil has flatwater and downwind SUP foil clinics this weekend with Jeremy Riggs. Actually, it’s Friday and Saturday. Not free, but helpful if you have any inkling of attempting this sport. June 10th is the Gorge Adventure Race in White Salmon. Multi-discipline = multi-sport day.

Regular weekly events: NK Studios in Bingen has a donation-based yoga class at 7:30am every Tuesday. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, there’s a run from Pine Street Bakery. On Fridays at 2:30pm, there’s a free meditation and stretching class at Yoga Samadhi. On Saturday at 9am, there’s a by-donation outdoor group fitness on the 2rd floor deck above Ferment Brewing.

Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

Post is clear of snow to the top. Dog River and Surveyor’s are clear per my friend who rode them on 5/27. Bottle Prairie, 8 Mile, and Super Connector are open and already dusty. Super Duper Connector is open. There is still snow on a short section of Surveyor’s between the Cooks Meadow intersection and Dog River. Nestor Peak is clear of snow. Falls Creek isn’t even close! Cows are in on Hospital Hill. That means dogs are no longer allowed. Even if your dog is cool. Even if you’re a local. Even if … you get the picture! Hospital Hill is private land. Please respect the wishes of the landowners – they’re generous enough to let folks use that land, and dogs have been shot there before. Please don’t ride muddy trails, or you’ll do permanent damage. Always remember to consider gravel riding! If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: I was wandering around my garden yesterday and notice there’s some tomato pruning that needs to happen. That inspired me to ask ChatGPT, “How do I grow giant tomato plants?” The AI says: fertilize regularly, prune the lowest leaves (to prevent disease), put plants at least two feet apart, water deeply and infrequently, and mulch to prevent spores in the ground from getting to your plants and also to keep the soil moist. Lastly, use companion plants such as dill, marigolds, nasturtiums, sweet alyssum, and others. Plants like company too.
