Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Thursday, and we’ll have one last day of sunshine on the mountain before a shift to cloudy and snowy weather for the next few days. For Thursday, expect sunshine during the day and clouds overnight. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 9000′ during the day and 6500′ overnight. Wind will be SW 10 early, SW 15 in the afternoon, and SW 20 overnight.

Friday starts off cloudy and turns snowy by daybreak. Finally! The snow level will be 6500′ early, 5000′ when the snow hits, and 3500′ overnight. We’ll see about 0.3” water value (WV) during the day and up to 0.1” WV overnight. That gives us 2-3” of dense snow during the day and up to 1” of regular quality snow overnight. Wind will be SW 20-25 all day, dropping to S 10 overnight.

Saturday looks cloudy with flurries during the day with light snowfall turning to clear sky overnight. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 5000′ midday, and 1500′ after midnight. Just a trace of new snow will fall during the day. About 0.2” WV will fall overnight, for a couple inches of increasingly dry snow. Wind will be S 10 early, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and WSW 35 after midnight.

Sunday looks colder and snowier. The snow level will be 1500′ to start the day and down to the surface after 10pm or so (including in Portland). Daytime snowfall will be about 0.3” WV, and overnight snowfall will be 0.4” WV. That gives us 3-4” of powder during the day and 4-5” of powder overnight. Wind will be WSW 35 early, SW 20 in the afternoon, S 10 overnight, and W 10 after midnight. Light flurries continue on Monday while you shred perfect packed powder groom.

Road and Mountain Biking

I’m now getting consistent reports that Post and Hospital are “perfect dirt”. If you head out today, be mindful of areas not under the canopy. Those locations were likely sub-freezing last night and may be freeze-thaw today. That’s a situation where the soil structure liquefies, leaving it susceptible to damage. If you encounter freeze-thaw, please turn around so you don’t undo the hard work of volunteer trail crews. Whoopdee was reported to me by the trail builder as freeze-thaw, so please don’t go there.
