Gorge Wind Forecast

Weather systems moving through the area on Thursday and Friday will introduce some gustiness to the wind field. Those systems will also decrease the reliability and accuracy of what your forecasters predict. Take it all with a grain of salt!

For Thursday, we’ll have widespread 16-19 to start the day with lighter wind near Stevenson and Rowena (as always!). Midday wind appears likely to drop into the 5-10 range in the western Gorge and 10-13 east of Doug’s. As this incoming front moves closer mid to late afternoon, westerlies pick up to 14-17 from Stevenson to Mosier. They’ll fill in as far east as Avery in the evening. River flow is 150kcfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp today: 85.

Friday swings a cold front through the Gorge like a quarantined baseball player doing home-based batting practice. Clouds fill the western Gorge all day, and rain falls west of Underwood (or perhaps west of Viento). Westerlies start the day at 7-10 or so all through the land, all the way to Arlington. Timing of stronger wind is dependent on the timing of the incoming weather system, and models keep pushing it back. Let’s broad-brush it: westerlies build to 20-23 by late morning or early afternoon east of the clouds, probably east of Mosier or perhaps including Mosier. Strongest possible wind would be late afternoon or early evening (unless the timing keeps getting pushed back) – westerlies at gusty 24-28 from Rowena to Arlington. High temp: 79 under cloudy sky.

Saturday starts with a 5000′ deep marine layer and light westerlies in the west and light and variable wind in the east. While models like the idea of a calm day or even light easterlies, there’s a more likely scenario. Light wind for most of the day – light westerly west of Hood River, light easterly east of Mosier. Afternoon wind will likely be W 10-13 from Stevenson to Swell, possibly including Hood River and Mosier. High temp: 83. Sunday looks calm in the morning with stronger westerlies late in the day. Unfortunately, the latest run of models brings the strongest wind in overnight. That does set us up for a windy Monday.

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).
