It’s most definitely not snowing this morning on Mt. Hood. It’s raining. Hard. It’s possible this rain will switch to snow at the back end of this weather system, but the bulk of the moisture will fall in the incorrect form. The snow level will be around 7000′ this morning, 5500′ around 10am and 4500′ in the afternoon and evening. We’ll see 1.4” water value (WV) fall from the sky before 1pm, after which the precip will end. We may see an inch or so of snow at the back end of this system, but that’s the best we’re likely to see. Wind today will be WSW 30 this morning and W 30-40 after 10am, dropping to SW 10 after midnight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…
Tomorrow, Friday, starts off cloudy. Heavy precip starts up around 7am, continuing through noon and then switching to showers. The morning precip is a tricky call – it looks like Mt. Hood will be right on the border of the colder air north of this system and the warmer air to the south of the system. This means the snow level, at 5000′ early, could drop to 3000′ or could rise to 7000′, depending on the exact path of the low. So… hmm… we’re expecting 1” WV between 7am and noon. I think we’ll see 4-6” of wet snow, possibly mixed with some sleet, needles, or even a little rain. The snow level drops to 2000′ after noon, and we’ll receive .2” WV in the flurries, for 2-3” of regular old snow. Wind tomorrow will be S 10-15 early, rising to SW 15-20 mid-morning and turning to W 40-45 after noon.

See below for details.
Saturday looks colder with sunbreaks and flurries all day long. The snow level will be 1500′ all day. We’ll receive approximately .2” WV, for 2-3” of new snow. Or maybe less if the forecast dries out, as the Euro model suggests it will. Wind will be W 35 in the morning and W 20 in the afternoon. Sunday looks similar to Saturday.

Gorge Wind Forecast
East wind at 10-15 early this morning will switch to west wind at 10-13 after 8am or so. That will be followed by gusty 15-18 in the western Gorge and gusty 23-26 in the eastern Gorge. Tomorrow starts with E 25-35 and switches to W 20-23 pretty much everywhere after noon. If you are considering getting in the river, remember that there will be a lot of debris with all this rain. Also, the river temp is 40 degrees. Saturday starts off with light west wind and picks up to 12-15 in the western Gorge and 23-26 in the eastern Gorge.
Random Morning Thoughts
I had an interesting conversation in class last night with some of my aspiring therapist classmates. We were talking about our relationship with confronting and challenging clients. One of my classmates said she’s going to be very confrontational, because that what she likes from her therapists. I prefer a gentler style, because that’s what I like. Our styles come out of our preferences, and that’s representative of much larger issue: how each and every one of us relates with others.
We each prefer being treated in a certain way. And we make unconscious expectations that others want to be treated in the same way we do. That isn’t a correct assumption. Each of us has different communications styles, comfort levels with confrontation, ways of expressing emotions, etc.
When we interact with others, it’s important to be sensitive to their preferences and to react and respond in ways that respect those preferences. If you have a friend who likes you to call him on his BS, for goodness sakes, don’t beat around the bush. And if you have a friend who prefers your support and gentle encouragement to change, be that way with that person. Flexibility in relationship styles is important.
That said, it’s also important to balance that with being true to yourself. Compromising your boundaries or beliefs to serve another person doesn’t serve either of you. It’s a delicate balance of respecting yourself and respecting others. Play with this sometime if you like; when someone asks for the honest truth, give it to them the way they prefer, not the way you prefer. It might make you a little uncomfortable, but growth happens when you work through discomfort. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast
It’s very, very rainy out there this morning, and we’ve had .35” of rain since midnight. The heavy rain will continue through noon or 1pm, after which we may see a few sprinkles. Temps will be in the low 40’s all day. East wind early, west wind after noon. 99% chance of rainbows.
Tomorrow starts off with heavy rain, and that’ll be followed by showers after 1pm. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. East wind early, west wind after noon. 99.99% chance of rainbows. It’s possible we’ll see some black ice on the roads Friday night into Saturday morning. Be careful.
Saturday looks partly cloudy with occasional sprinkles. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and the mid 40’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate west wind. 73% chance of rainbows. It’s almost certain we’ll have icy roads Saturday night and Sunday morning.
The GFS model suggests we’ll spend quite a bit of time below freezing between Sunday and Wednesday night. It’s possible we’ll see a few flurries in this period. More concerning is the GFS forecast for Wednesday night: cold air trapped in the Gorge and warm air coming over the top. Let’s just keep an eye on it for now, but there is the potential for snow and ice Wednesday night.

Road and Mountain Biking
As of 7:30am, we’d had .35” of rain this morning, meaning all the trails, including Syncline, are too muddy to ride. We’re expecting another roudn of heavy rain tomorrow morning, so you may want to familiarize yourself with your trainer bike. Or the trainer bike at the Power Station gym. The gym can be your gym for a few days. It’s okay.
