Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Offshore low pressure, instability, and clouds continue to damp down the wind. We should see just enough for some of you to get on the river at some point over the next few days. That said, models are all over the place on wind speeds, likely due to the active weather. Looking deep into the future, models hint at offshore high pressure and stronger west wind briefly returning early next week before the weather turns active for a few days and then hot and potentially easterly. Maybe.

Thursday starts light and cloudy. We’ll see the wind slowly pick up thanks to thermals, but we’ll also see the negative impact of instability. It’s probably worth mentioning that cloud cover could limit heating, and that could limit wind. So, let’s talk best-case scenario: for the morning, the wind slowly picks up to 13-16 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 farther east. Afternoon wind slowly builds to gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Rufus (strongest readings from Lyle to Rufus, where the direction won’t be great). Late in the day, that 22-26 swath of west wind fills in as far east as Arlington. Swell is unlikely to perform well in this setup. We’ll probably see a short period of 20-23 there before the wind drops to gusty 14-17. River flow over the last 24 hours was 91-143kcfrs, river temp is 70.52F, and high temp forecast is a measly 73F for Hood River. Arlington: 83F.

Friday sees another round of active, unstable weather. Expect clouds and even, maybe, drizzle in the western Gorge. Models keep the wind below 10mph west of The Dalles all day. Afternoon forecast from the deterministic GFS is 18-22 from Avery to Boardman. That said, the Euro ensemble is much more favorable with 24-27. Seems that we still have a wide possibility of outcomes. And with instability widespread, the wind may just decide to make its own plan. High temp: 63F for Hood River. 68F for Arlington.

On Saturday, we have all sorts of inconsistency and range in the ensembles. The wind is likely to start light, less than 10mph west of The Dalles with 13-16 from Avery to Boardman. Afternoon wind looks to be gusty low to mid 20’s east of The Dalles and mid to upper teens from Stevenson to Doug’s. High temp: 64F and partly cloudy.

Extended: active weather continues for the extended period. Sunday’s forecast, deterministic and ensemble, is for light wind, less than 10mph and perhaps even calm. Models hint at offshore high pressure rebuilding on Monday and sticking around on Tuesday, which could give us a couple of decent Corridor west wind days. After that, the range of possibilities increases. Easterlies for a couple days are potentially part of the mix. Generally speaking, the weather looks warmer from the middle of next week on. Depending on where the hottest weather sets up, we could see east wind or west wind. Hard to plan in advance this time of year! Have a great day on the river!
