Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Thursday, and if your timing is flexible, you might be able to pounce on some easterlies this afternoon or early tomorrow morning. Other than those times, offshore low pressure systems put the damper on Gorge wind for much of the upcoming week. There are little hints of a west wind day next Friday (not tomorrow) in the operational GFS, but ensembles don’t really agree. That’s way, way far out to forecast, but we can still cross our fingers!

Thursday starts light and variable. Thanks to inland high pressure, easterlies pick up this afternoon. They’ll build to 20ish at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and Stevenson with 10-15 at Viento. That should last all through the evening and increase overnight. Areas east of Swell pick up to E 5-10mph this afternoon. River flow yesterday was 70-85kcfs, River temp is 64F, and high temp forecast is 66F.

Friday starts with E25-30 from Iwash to Stevenson with 15ish at Viento. Move quickly. Get on it! Easterlies fade to 15-20 from Iwash to Stevenson and 10ish at Viento by late morning. Afternoon: calm everywhere but Stevenson, where you’ll find E 5-10. High temp: 66F. Saturday starts calm. Afternoon wind ahead of an incoming front should pick up to W 10-13 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Sunday: light and variable. That’s about it. Have a wonderful day today!

Regular weekly events:. NK Studio’s by-donation Tuesday morning yoga class is back. Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. There’s meditation with monks at 5:15pm (an hour) and 6:30pm (30 minutes plus a talk) at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. The Tri Club is done for the season. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. Paddle folks (OC/Surfski) meet at the Hatch Thursday evenings for laps. Regular bike rides (thanks to the Hood River Area Trail Stewards for collecting). Tuesday is Mountain View’s ride. Meet at 5:45pm on Post Canyon Drive where the pavement ends. Wednesday is the Evo/Kickstand all-ability, no-drop Post Canyon ride. 5:30 from the shop or join along the way. All abilities welcome. Thursday is Mountain View’s women’s ride. 5:30pm, Seven Streams Trailhead. No drop. Thursday is also the Dirty Fingers Post and Pint. 5:30 from the shop or later at Family Man. This is hardcore, race-pace. Saturday morning is the Mountain View road/gravel ride. Two hours. 12-14mph average speed. Starting May 6th, Oregon Ebikes has the women’s ride at 8:30am. Meet at Seven Streams parking lot for a 1.5 to 2 hour ride.

Cycling

We picked up a third of an inch of rain last night (today is Thursday), which is probably enough for Post to be slick. Consider Syncline or Whoopdee. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay? Trails on private land that were previously closed due to fire danger (Hospital Hill, Underwood, Whoopdee) have reopened. No trails have closed yet due to snow. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
