Mt. Hood snow forecast
Hi friends – summary forecast coming up, but first… if you have the ability to work from home, consider coming up to Meadow to WF-MHM. I’m up here running through the weather models, and then I’m headed out for turns. Work, shred, repeat. There’s tons of space, empty tables, sunshine, and wi-fi. I’m sure you could do the same at Timberline and maybe the cabin at Teacup. This beats the heck out of working under the gray doom cloud in the Gorge.
K. On to the forecast: one last day of sunny weather is in the cards today. Get up here and get some sunshine! High clouds arrive on Wednesday ahead of a system slated for Thursday. There will still be some sun, but it’ll be filtered, and the light will get flatter in the afternoon. There’s still quite a bit of uncertainty from Thursday onward, but it does appear that moisture (probably in the form of light snowfall) will re-enter the picture. Friday: potentially mixed precipitation, and then it’s back to snow for the weekend into early next week. That’s enough to make some decisions on when to ride this week. Happy shredding! Looking at today’s forecast (Tuesday) requires shades or dark goggles: it’s going to be a sunny one. Thin high clouds may drift in this afternoon. The free air freezing level will be 10,000′ all day. It drops to 8000′ overnight. Temps will max out in the upper 40s at 5000′ today after a mid-20s start. Dress in layers and plan to strip some (but not all, please!). Wind today will be light and variable. Are you from the Gorge? Today’s a great day to WFMHM (Work from Mt. Hood Meadows). Nordic skiers: no fresh groom today, but in an interesting twist yesterday, Teacup was fast hardpack and Meadows was slow packed powder. That’s the difference a little elevation will make when the snow level is borderline.
High clouds filter the sun on Wednesday. The free air freezing level starts at 8000′ and drops to 6500′ during the day before dropping to 5000′ overnight. Temps max out in the upper 30s during the day. Wind will be W 15-20 early, SSW 10-20 in the afternoon, and SE 10-15 after midnight as a low passes somewhere offshore.
Details for Thursday aren’t yet clear. A low pressure system offshore will send a wave of precipitation towards Mt. Hood, but the quantity and temp of that precipitation depends on the location of that low. Its path is far from certain at this point. It seems likely that we’ll see light snow Thursday and mixed precip Friday before the snow level drops this weekend. Over the weekend, we have continued uncertainty with a high likelihood of at least some snow. I’ll refine this forecast as we get closer. Have a wonderful sunny day on the slopes today!
Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! Easterlies continues for the next few days. Today’s the strongest day, most likely, but it you’re quick, you should be able to get a river session in today, tomorrow, and Thursday. Today’s the sunniest one, tho, so it’ll be the best! We starts with pressures of 30.44/30.57/30.59 for an easterly gradient of 0.13. As of the writing of this report, Iwash (Rooster) was reading 37, Stevenson 19, and Viento 23. Iwash rises to 40-45 this morning and drops to 30-35 this afternoon. Stevenson rises to 30-35 mid-morning and falls to 20-25 this afternoon. River flow over the last 24 hours was 86-140kcfs, river temp is 47.30F, and high temp forecast is 41F with sun in the windy zones.
Wednesday brings another round of easterlies, but they won’t be quite as strong. Iwash starts with 35 and drops to 25-30. Stevenson start with 30 and does the slow fade to 20-25. High temp: 40F under increasingly cloudy sky. Thursday starts with 40 at Iwash and 30 at Stevenson. By early afternoon, the wind drops to 25 and Iwash and 20 at Stevenson. Take 5mph off that after 1pm. High temp: low 40s with drizzle (or snain) possible in the afternoon. Friday: Light east wind to start building to an unknown strength as a low passes somewhere offshore. Let’s leave it there for now due to uncertainty. Have a great day on the river today!
