The Great Cooldown II – 8/26

Good morning! This week’s report is brought to you by Columbia Gorge Windsurfing Association. It’s PSA week, so no prizes. You’re actually supposed to join CGWA this week. Why? Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

If you like lots of wind, clear your schedule today, because it’s going to be a big day on the river. At 5am, a cold front was making its way into the Northwest, and marine clouds were pushing into P ortland. The Portland to The Dalles Gradient was a .14 early, with another .04 out east.

The wind was blowing in the upper teens at 5am, but it’s going to pick up quickly today. We’ll see a quick build into the 25-28 range from Stevenson to the Hatchery, with 19-23 at the Sandbar. As the front approaches, the wind will pick up to 30+ for a little while at the Hatchery, and then probably get gusty near Hood River, and pick up in the desert. This afternoon brings 28-32 or more at Doug’s, Rufus, and Arlington, with strongest, steadiest wind at Arlington and Roosevelt.

On Friday, low pressure sets up across the Cascades, keeping Hood River cool and cloudy and shifting the strongest, steadiest wind east. Even so, the wind will probably only blow in the 17-20 range at best tomorrow. Saturday looks lighter than Friday, but that could change.

Coming up tonight, there’s the Dirty Fingers hot lap in Post Canyon, the Thursday night Tri practice, and a free crossfit workout meeting at the south end of the event site at 5:30.

Boaters, the White Salmon’s still hovering around 1.85 feet and the Klickitat’s right around 750 cfs. If you’re available Saturday, there’s a free kayak slalom clinic on the Clackamas. Give Alder Creek a call for more information or head here for more information. There’s also an associated race on Sunday.

Also this weekend is the Oregon Open Ocean SUP race at Newport, Oregon. Check it out here. Closer to home, there’s a free windsurfing clinic with Cliff Ryden on Northwave’s lawn on Sunday from noon ‘til 2pm.

And finally, don’t forget about the Bigfoot Bash and Bounty coming up this weekend in Home Valley.

That’s it for today. Whatever you do today, have an awesome day!
