There’s a nice deep marine layer this morning with both low and mid level clouds past Hood River, suggesting you may want to burn some fossil fuel driving eastward today for the strongest steadiest wind. Gradients agree with the clouds: at 7am, we had .09 (pdx-dls) and .07 (dls-psc), suggesting a Doug’s-Maryhill day is on the way. That said, the strongest wind at 7am was at Swell: low to mid twenties, with everywhere else in the 10-13 range. Continued after the chart…

Gorge wind forecast, continued…
Expect the wind to pick up today as an upper low sits over BC, high pressure sits off the OR coast, and the desert warms up under clear sky. We’ll see 20-23 for the early morning session from Viento to Swell (possibly quite up and down). By late morning, we should have 22-25 from Viento to Arlington. The afternoon session today looks like 25-29 from Mosier to Arlington with 22-25 at Swell. Cascade Locks and Stevenson will have 10-13 this morning and 16-19 when the clouds burn off.

The upper low shifts east of the Cascades on Monday afternoon. That leaves us with a tricky forecast. Expect light westerlies in the morning, say, 10 mph or less. As the low makes a move late morning, we’ll see gusty 20-23 from Viento to Rufus. The wind will likely die back to gusty 13-16 west of Mosier in the afternoon as clouds push in, bringing a chance of showers. As the clouds move in, the wind should pick up to 22-25 in the afternoon from Mosier to Arlington. Cascade Locks and Stevenson will likely stay in the clouds on Monday, for light wind early and 12-15 in the afternoon.
Tuesday starts off with light west wind at 7-10 or so. By midday, we should see 15-18 from Swell to Rufus, with 20-23 in the afternoon. Wednesday starts off with light westerlies and picks up to 13-16, strongest near Hood River.

Random Morning Thoughts
I was almost done with the forecast this morning when I got completely and utterly distracted replying to an email. That’s what happens when Temira doesn’t spend enough time meditating and spends too much time studying. #gradschoolbrain
Anyway, I had an interesting conversation with some friends of mine yesterday about activity planning with friends. They mentioned how they had made plans with friends, but the friends backed out because they wanted to do a different activity. Lots of us do this. I’ve done this. You’ve probably done this. This can have a pretty big impact on the person who was looking forward to the other’s company.
Something to keep in mind is that when we plan something with a friend, we should be planning around our relationship with the friend, not so much around the activity. In other words, if the activity is dealbreaker in plans, then you may be planning around your desires, not around your relationships. Because, with very few exceptions, you can enjoy any activity if you’re with someone you care about.
Next time you’re making plans with friends and arguing about “what” to do, rather than “with whom” you’re doing it, check in with yourself. Are you excited to be with the people you’re making plans with? Or are you simply interested in the activity? If it’s the latter, it may be time to do some reflection about the friendship and about your needs. Speaking of activities, enjoy your water time today. Have an awesome day!
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be in 700 days). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.
