Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Snow quality on the mountain yesterday was darn fine, especially considering how little snow there is. Snow quality today won’t be so great. It’s soaked. As I was writing this, the latest hourly rainfall total up there was 0.29”. And it’s still POURING. That’s the plan for today on the slopes – rain. We might get an inch or two of snow at the tail end of this, but that’s about it. Next week looks mostly dry with the possible exception of some rain midweek. Model agreement falls apart at the end of next week. That said, generally speaking, the extended forecast ensembles are keeping 850mb temps (5000′) above the snow threshold for the next 10-14 days.

For Sunday, expect heavy rain on the slopes. The solution to this is to wear a heavy-duty trash bag over your usual clothing. The snow level starts at 6500′, drops to 6000′ in the afternoon, and falls to 4000′ overnight. Most of the precip will be done by the time the snow level falls far enough to make a difference. We’ll see 0.5” to 1.0” rain today followed by 0.1” to 0.2” water equivalent (WE) as snow, for 1-2” new. Wind: W 30 this morning, W 20 this afternoon, and W 15 overnight.

Monday will be clear and sunny and sub-freezing. Can you say, “Icy”? If you’re going, sharpen your edges and grab your carving gear. The free air freezing level (FAF) will be 4000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and will rise to 7000′ after midnight. Wind: W 15 in the morning, light and variable in the afternoon, and SE 10 overnight. Tuesday looks sunny. The FAF will be 7000′ early, 10,000′ in the afternoon, and 11,000′ overnight. Hey, that’s not very wintry! Wind: SE 10 in the morning, SSE 20 in the afternoon, and S 10-20 after midnight.

A weather system may or may not brush us with some rain late Wednesday into early Thursday. We see a variety of offerings from the ensembles starting late next week. That said, they generally keep temps too high for snowfall at 5000′ through (horrors) Christmas. Let’s hope that changes. Thank goodness yesterday was a fun day on the mountain! Snow dances, please. And dryland training.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, friends! Not much doing for the next two days, but after that we’ll have two days of easterlies. For Sunday, expect light and variable wind. River flow yesterday was 73-160kcfs, river temp is 47F, and high temp forecast is 42F. Monday will be light westerly in the morning and light/variable in the afternoon. High temp: 49F.

Easterlies return on Tuesday, and they look to last all day Tuesday. Expect morning wind at 30-35 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock with 25-30 at Stevenson and 15-20 at Viento. Afternoon wind rises to 20 at Viento, holds near 30 at Stevenson, and rises to 35-40 at Iwash. High temp: 45F. It should be sunny in the windy zones. Watch out for debris in the water. Wednesday starts with 30mph easterlies and fades in the afternoon. Models have been bouncing around a lot about the later part of next week, so let’s leave it there. Have a great day!

Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information.
