Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and a lack of weather dynamics today should make the wind steadier and more reliable than yesterday. We’ll move on to easterlies for Monday, but it’ll be a quick return to westerlies by mid-morning Tuesday. Not only will the westerlies return. They’ll thrive. Expect very strong wind Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday’s dawn patrol.

Sunday starts off with westerlies in the teens all through the Gorge (exception: Viento is reading in the 20’s) and a PDX-DLS gradient of .08 or .09, depending on your source. The gradient should hold all day. That gives us a forecast of 19-23 by late morning from Viento to Mosier with 13-16 from Lyle to Rowena and at Stevenson. Eastern Gorge wind will fade. Don’t drive. Afternoon: 19-23 from Stevenson to Doug’s with light westerlies, less than 10mph, east of The Dalles. High temp: 83F. Kiteboard for Cancer festivities continue at the Event Site today. Launching and landing is limited to participants.

Heat settles in over the west side on Monday and turns the wind around. That means the first day of the Gorge Downwind Champs could be a rest day. That’s fine – no more rest days are currently predicted! Easterlies will be in the 10-15mph range from Rooster to Viento until early afternoon. Afternoon: 10mph from Rooster to Viento with calm wind near Hood River and light easterlies east of Mosier. High temp: 93F.

Cooler air arrives on the west side Tuesday morning. Afternoon highs in Portland should be down about 10 degrees, but afternoon highs in the desert will be up from Monday’s. This is a recipe for strong wind, and indeed, that’s what models say: “This is the cooldown you’ve been looking for”. By mid-morning, expect 21-24. No need to hurry. Mid-afternoon: 25-28+ from Viento to Avery (20-23 at Stevenson). Evening: 29-33 from Stevenson to Arlington. There is some hint of surface-based instability in the afternoon. That could cause trouble for wind quality, but you should be able to find someplace that’s windy enough to satisfy you (if strong wind is your thing). Want lighter wind: go earlier in the day. High temp: 93F.

Wednesday morning starts out nuking from Viento to Mosier and may result in this forecaster not forecasting that day due to the need to Dawn Patrol: 29-33mph. Models suggest the wind will quickly do the slow-and-steady fade to 22-25. Looking deeper into the week, into the “may not be reliable” forecast zone, we see lighter westerlies Thursday followed by a potential but not guaranteed resurgence of stronger wind Friday through Sunday. Subject to change. Have a great day!

Local-ish Events

Please let me know of outdoor-related local-ish events. If you don’t tell me, I don’t know! This weekend (Friday-Sunday) is Kiteboard for Cancer at the Hood River Event Site. The Oregon 12/24 hour mountain bike race takes place in Bend this weekend. The Gorge Downwind Champs run 7/11-7/16 and are staged out of the Skamania County Fairgrounds.

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. At 7am on Friday morning, you can get a donut and coffee for going for a run at Kickstand Coffee. The Small Boat paddlers have a group paddle at 6pm on Thursday at the Hatchery. Post and Pint happens Thursday evenings at 5:30 when Post is not too wet to ride. The women’s Post-and-Pinot ride is Wednesday evening at 5:30.

Cycling

Lots of perfect dirt out there right now! Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain and Cooks Meadow still have some blowdown and a few patches of snow. Plains of Abraham is open. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. Starting now, you will need a parking pass to park at Post Canyon. This money will support trails. Hospital Hill: cows are out – no dogs allowed. Underwood: do not enter areas that are closed due to logging operations.
