Gorge Wind Forecast

Fishing weather sticks around through midday today followed by moderate to strong afternoon westerlies. Westerlies dissipate quickly on Monday morning and are replaced by strong easterlies all across the land by the afternoon. Very strong to nuking easterlies continue on Tuesday at all elevations.

Sunday starts off chilly, which will give the west side a jump on heating. Early gradients of .08 and .03 indicate we’ll still have wind. As the heating race progresses during the day, the westerlies hold in the 13-16 range near Viento and less than 10mph everywhere else. While it’s possible the wind could pick up earlier than this forecast says, temp forecasts suggest that’s unlikely. You’ll probably be waiting until after 1pm or 2pm to really see the whitecaps grown. Afternoon wind: 22-26 from Stevenson to The Dalles, holding through the evening. River flow is 95,000cfs and temp is 69 degrees. High temp: 88.

Labor Day brings an historic east wind event along with EXTREME fire danger. No fires. Please. Especially if you’re in the woods or grasslands. Westerlies start the day at 10-13, but probably go calm by daybreak. By late morning, we’ll have EAST wind at 20-25 from Hood River eastward. The wind picks up to 25-35 from Rooster Rock to Idaho in the afternoon with equally strong wind away from the river. High temp: 85.

East gradients intensify Monday night into Tuesday. Just for kicks, let’s look at the approximate gradients. 10Mb across the Gorge, for 0.30 from Portland to The Dalles. Incredible 25mb from North Bend to Spokane, for 0.74 (that’s similar to your North Bend-Pasco gradient). While 0.30 through the Gorge isn’t uncommon in winter, it’s unheard of this time of year. For Tuesday, expect 40-60 at Rooster, 35-45 at Stevenson, and 25-30 at Viento and 20-25 east of Viento to The Dalles. That said, if the wind field is above the Cascade Crest, the wind could be less than that along the river. Read TATAS for more details. High temp: 76. Hotter to the west, getting into the 90’s at the coast.

If you are camping Labor Day weekend, DO NOT start a fire. Any remaining coals or sparks are likely to lead to wildfire due to extreme wind and extremely dry air. Please police others and inform them of the danger. You can live without a campfire this time!

Due to crowding and unsafe conditions at Port beaches, parking restrictions now apply Friday through Sunday. Remember: crowds lead to closures. Kiting is no longer allowed at the Marina – it has become unsafe for other user groups. Lyle is now off limits unless you can get to the sandbar without crossing the RR tracks. If you cross the tracks, you will be ticketed. Lyle: loved to death. Roosevelt: still closed due to wind damage from earlier this year. Mosier is only available to residents of 97040 (Mosier).

Mt. Hood Meadows allows hiking within the permit area. However, you will need to park outside their parking lots. Timberline is open for lift-serve skiing with exemplary guidelines for protecting guests and staff from the transmission of novel coronavirus. Please read their guidelines and rules here. Well done, T-Line! The Mt. Hood weather forecast will be on vacation unless something interesting happens in the weather up there. Timberline is allowing uphill access outside the permit area on the climbers’ trail only.

Have an awesome day!
