Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

If you happen to be a windsport person, you’ll likely be delighted with the forecast for the next few days. If you’re a fisherperson or orchardist, you’ll be less pleased. Sunday is starting off windy as offshore high pressure at 1029mb combines with lower pressure in the desert. We’re expecting 15 degrees of cross-Cascade temp gradient today, which should add to the wind. That said, models disagree on today’s wind.

The GFS starts with 21-24 near Hood River, drops the wind to 13-16, and brings it back to 18-23 from Stevenson to Mosier. The Euro builds the wind all day long, taking it into the 24-28 range. Let’s just split the difference and go with gusty 23-27 from mid-morning on from Viento to Mosier, with Doug’s and Stevenson joining in the afternoon. Less wind will be found east of The Dalles, with 13-16 from Avery to Celilo, massive current at Rufus, and W 5-10 all day at Arlington. River temp is 56 degrees. Flow at The Dalles is 479kcfs.

A frontal system approaching Sunday night moves closer on Monday morning. Usually this disrupts the wind field, but the sounding model is keeping a low-level stable layer around all day. If that’s right, we’ll have more marine air to the west, a 20 degree cross-Cascade gradient, and strong high pressure offshore. Combine all that for Dawn Patrol at 22-25 from Viento to Mosier (10-13 Stevenson, 10-13 east). Afternoon westerlies pick up to 28-32 from Stevenson to (finally!) Arlington, with the strongest wind Viento to Rufus.

Disruptive things happen to the weather on Tuesday (approaching trough, afternoon shortwave), meaning the steadiest wind will probably be in the morning. There’s also model disagreement on Tuesday with the GFS calling for 24-28 (Stevenson to The Dalles) and the Euro liking 28-32 (Stevenson to Rufus). Either way, it looks windy. Models agree on less wind for Wednesday. Westerlies in the 18-23 range are likely.

BONUS: Jones Sunday: 21-24. Monday: 12-15. Tuesday: 24-28. Sauvie’s Sunday: 7-10. Monday: 13-16. Tuesday: 15-18. Coast (north/central/south). Sunday: 10-15/15-20/30+, W 7′ at 11 seconds. Monday: 20-25/20-25/30+, W 6′ @ 11. Tuesday: 25-30/25-30/35+, W 8′ @ 11.
