Gorge Wind Forecast

Smoke and high clouds complicate the forecast again today, and then we move into a couple of days of light wind. After that, a pattern shift brings much cooler weather and at least one day of very strong westerlies.

Sunday morning starts out looking a lot like Saturday. The gradients are there – 0.09 and 0.01 – but so are the high clouds and smoke. Models insist that the high clouds will burn off this afternoon. They also have a slight chance of thunder. The day starts with 21-24ish near Viento, 16-19 near Swell, and 10-13ish everywhere else. Models predict an big increase in the wind, especially this afternoon, but given the sky coverage, a conservative forecast is wiser. Let’s go with 21-24 from Stevenson to Hood River by late morning. Afternoon wind should hold. The Lyle-Doug’s stretch joins at 19-22 later. East of there: 10-13. High temp: the forecast is 91F, but unless the clouds burn off faster, we’ll probably end up in the 80’s. River flow is 119kfs and river temp is 70F.

A weak weather system is forecast to swing through on Monday, but that won’t do much to counteract high pressure building inland from the east. Dawn Patrol is your only chance: 14-17 from Viento to Swell with 7-10 to the east. By late morning, the whole Gorge will be light and variable. High temp: 96F. Not much more is forecast Tuesday: 10-13 to start, less than 10mph most of the day, and 14-17 from Stevenson to The Dalles (light and variable to the east) late afternoon.

Models hint at 21-24 on Wednesday. A cold front is forecast on Thursday. As that whips through the area, westerlies build to 30+. With Hood River likely to be cloudy all day Thursday, you’ll be driving eastward for the strongest wind. It’ll be worth it. Have a great Sunday!

Coast, Jones, Coast

Coast (north/central/south, waves. Wind direction north unless otherwise noted. Swell forecast from NWS.) Sunday: 10-15/20-25/questionable, W swell 3′ @ 8 seconds. Monday: 25-30/10-15/15-20?, W 3′ @ 8. Tuesday: 10-15/10-15/20-25, SW 3′ @ 17. Jones Sunday: 19-22. Monday: 22-25. Tuesday: 22-25. Sauvie’s Sunday: 7-10. Monday: 15-28. Tuesday: 14-17.

Cycling

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger.

Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Siouxon and Huffman Peak are “temporarily closed” due to wildfire last year.

Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
