Sunday. Wind. Heat. Then lots more wind.

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Random Morning Thoughts

Someone emailed this to me the other day, and I thought I would share: “We took a nice early morning ride from Hood River to Mosier and back, passed a number of riders – smiled and said hi to all of them. We were surprised that more than half didn’t respond, even a nod. It was super beautiful out; you would think that everyone would be feeling happy and respond as such. Please encourage folks to smile more; it’s good for the soul.” I couldn’t agree more. Smile and say hello, folks, because we’re all interconnected. We live on the same planet, and we’re not getting away from each other, so let’s be friendly and increase our sense of connection by saying hello.

Pledge Drive is suspended for today due to the generosity of so many of you. Thank you!

Thanks for coming here for your forecast. It’s time for the summer pledge drive! “WHAT?”, you say, “I thought this was free!” It is, but it takes lots of time. It’s my job, and you’re my employers! Here’s the deal: Every day someone has to pledge. If not, no website forecast the next day: only the people on the email list get their forecast. Want on that list? Make a donation. Do I save you gas? Find you more fun? Entertain you? The email list is not $99/year. Not $50/year. No, just $12.34 or more gets you on the list for the next year! Anything over the minimum feeds my coffee and bicycle addictions and makes me feel loved, and god knows we all need to feel loved. Do it via PayPal/CC by clicking on my photo. And thank you so much for your support.

Gorge Wind

The wind and gradients this morning are already outpacing the weather models, even the high resolution models. But Portland is 100% sunny, so the desert heat won’t beat the city swelter today. For more wind than we’re seeing now, we’re relying on offshore high pressure that’s supposed to build late this afternoon. So. Expect 14-17 early, followed by 17-20 midday, possibly a bit more, strongest from Hood River to Mosier early and filling in to Stevenson late morning. After 3pm, as that high pressure builds offshore, we’ll see the potential for 21-24 at the Lyle-Doug’s stretch, and possibly, but less likely, at Stevenson/Hatch/Hood River. Eastern Gorge beaches will remain relatively light today, with the potential for 13-16 from Maryhill eastward early in the evening.

Tomorrow sees a ridge build inland, with hot weather across the PNW. Models suggest we’ll start with 13-15 near Hood River, with the wind dropping midday and picking up to gusty 15-18 from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon. There’s a monkey wrench in the setup tomorrow afternoon: atmospheric instability. It’s probably best to not bank on that afternoon session.

Tuesday sees the Classic Gorge Setup arrive midday. We’ll start with 17-21 or more, and then we’ll see a build to 26-30, strongest at the Hatch early and Lyle-Doug’s later. If those pesky long-range models are correct, some variety of Classic Gorge Setup with occasional weak systems will keep us in wind through next weekend.

If you are looking for photos from yesterday, Grant was shooting at the Hatchery Basement (eastern/lower Hatch) yesterday afternoon. Then he was at the Spit (Hood River sandbar) in the evening.

Gorge Weather

It’s quite pleasant outside this morning, so I’ve opened all my doors and windows (2 of each) in order to make the weather in my house resemble the weather outside my house. Don’t try that trick in winter, or you may end up with a skating rink on your kitchen floor next time we have an ice storm.

We won’t see any ice storms today. Or rainbows, sadly. Just sunshine this morning mixed with high clouds this afternoon. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and mid 80’s later, with increasing humidity. Tomorrow looks sunny, until the afternoon, when we may see some convective clouds fire up across the Cascades, for a 39% chance of a colorful sunset. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and low 90’s in the afternoon. Tuesday looks sunny with temps in the low 60’s early and mid 80’s in the afternoon.

Road and Mountain Biking

Holy moly was it hot on Vista Ridge yesterday around 2pm. Remind me not to do that ride on a hot day again. I did find one very nice thing on Lake Branch Road: someone, I don’t know if it was USFS or Longview Fiber, paved over all the potholes. It’s in perfect shape all the way to the Wahtum Lake intersection. Nice. Thank you, road fairy.

River Levels

The White Salmon is at 2.75′. The Klickitat is at 1150cfs. The John Day dam is putting out 151-191cfs and The Dalles dam is reading 155kcfs. Columbia river temp is 64 degrees at The Dalles Dam.

Events – email me if I’ve missed any outdoor-related events

If you want to shop for gear this morning, head on over to Windance for their last all-sports swap meet of the year from 8-1. The WIND youth regatta sailboat races continue in Cascade Locks today, and there’s free community yoga at 9am at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. Also today, our local mountain bike teams are racing enduro in Bend.

There’s pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm today. There’s ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 3pm ($5), and there’s the Alternative Ride from Mountain View Cycles to the Mosier cider house, at 5:30.

Looking ahead to next week, Kiteboarding for Cancer runs Friday through Sunday at the Hood River Event Site – they’re still looking for volunteers and cookie bakers. Also next week, the Laser Gorge Blowout is scheduled for Thursday. Holy crap… that’s going to be gnarly if the forecast holds: little tiny boats in nuking wind. The Laser masters North American championships are in Cascade locks next Friday-Sunday, and Skibowl has an uphill/downhill mountain bike race.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
