Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Who’s ready to get in the water and play? Meeeeeee! Youuuuuuu! And get in the water we shall. Models are quite enthusiastic about west wind all this upcoming week. The details are unclear, and there are a lot of moving parts, but the picture is generally for onshore flow. Cooler temps too!

Sunday starts with pressures of 29.91/29.81/29.78 for gradients of 0.10 and 0.03. It appears we have at least some marine clouds in Portland this morning. Helpful. Models keep the west side ten degrees cooler than the east side today and establish a weak offshore high. All good things. Working against us: smoke limiting desert heating, a weak system moving towards Washington, and instability in the eastern Gorge. If there weren’t a bunch of smoke around, the forecast would be easier. I’ll do my best. Give the river a couple hours to get its groove on. Once it does, we’ll have 21-24 from Viento to Mosier and 14-17 from Lyle to Rufus. Stevenson will be slow to start, but it eventually rises to 20-23 late morning or early afternoon. It looks like we’ll see a late morning burst of 23-26 from Viento to Hood River, but we’re relying on sun warming the east side for this to happen. Later in the day, as the metro area heats and clears, the Stevenson-Hood River stretch drops to gusty 18-22. Between Mosier and Rufus, we’ll see gusty 25-28, strongest between Lyle and Avery. Evening wind rises to 22-25 from Blalock to Threemile. River flow over the last 24 hours was 69-113kcfs, river temp is 70.16F, and high temp forecast is 84F for Hood River with low 90s in the desert.

Monday looks like a more stable setup: less moving pieces, less instability, less smoke. The day starts with a bit of a marine layer in the metro area. Westerlies should be 21-24 to start from Viento to Mosier with 14-17 from Mosier to Doug’s and 17-20 between Avery and Arlington. Sometime late morning or early afternoon, the wind rises to 23-26 from Stevenson to Lyle with 20-23 near Rufus and 17-20 near Arlington. 25-28mph from Lyle to Arlington isn’t out of the question for the afternoon session. Also happening in the afternoon: a dip to 17-20 between Swell and Hood River thanks to heating on the west side. MAKE THE MARINE LAYER DEEP AGAIN! High temp: 82F.

A system pushes towards us on Tuesday. While the deterministic GFS (the go-to model) isn’t all that enthusiastic as of now – mid 20s at best – the ensembles of the Euro are more excited about a bigger eastern Gorge day. We’ll keep an eye on it. High temps drop in to the mid 70s on the west side and mid 80s out in the desert.

Extended: active weather continues on Wednesday with a chance of rain. The details are far from clear, but you can count on the strongest wind being out east. For now, it looks like 20-23mph. The ensembles are zoning in on Thursday as the windiest day late in the week: mid to upper 20s. Friday looks like a close second. But then again, there’s a fair bit of spread in the models that far out. Models are currently hinting at west wind for next weekend. Fingers crossed they keep that plan! Have a great day on the river today!
