Sunday. Wet, followed by rainbows.

We’re starting off Sunday with an easterly gradient of .03 and light and variable (LTV) wind on the water. As a frontal system moves through midday, we’ll see a short-lived burst of 23-26 at Arlington before the wind turns to light westerlies all the way from Cascade Locks to Arlington. Probably not worth the drive…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Monday sees another weak weather system move through the region. As weak high pressure builds off the coast, a decent synoptic-scale gradient develops. That should give us 25-29 from Cascade Locks to Arlington between the hours of 10am and 2pm. The steadiest wind will be east of the low clouds. After 2pm, the wind will fade to 13-16.

Tuesday looks like 10-13 everywhere in the morning with 13-16 east of Mosier from late morning on through the afternoon. Wednesday currently looks either LTV or light westerly.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The snow level on this Sunday morning is around 5500′. It will stay there during the day, rise to 6500′ in the afternoon, and fall back to 5500′ tonight. Precip will fall as non-sticking wet snow, also known as “snain”. Wind today will be SW 30 early, falling to SW 20 in the afternoon and picking up to SW 30 tonight.

Monday looks partly cloudy with sprinkles or showers to start with snow after 10pm. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 6500′ during the day, and 4500′ after midnight. We’ll see about .2” water value in the dark hours for a couple inches of new snow at 5000′. Wind on Monday will be W 50 in the morning, SW 20-30 in the evening, and W 30 after midnight.

Tuesday sees sunshine and flurries. The snow level will be 4500′ early, 3500′ during the day, and 5500′ after 5pm. No measurable accumulation. Wind will be W 25 all day, becoming light and variable after midnight. No big snow storms in the forecast, but there’s a 99% chance the ski resorts will be blowing up social media with photos after the Monday night snowfall!

Random Morning Thoughts

We humans are capable of feeling the most extraordinary range of emotions. We can feel utterly hopeless, we can feel completely blissed out, and we can feel everything in between. Experiencing these emotions can leave us feeling powerless and overwhelmed at times.

One trick for managing this (and the anxiety that can arise from feeling a lack of control) is to learn to disidentify from the emotional roller coaster. You are not your emotions. They are just states pushed upon you by your mind.

Fighting to disidentify likely won’t work – you’re just feeding the beast by resisting it. Going with the flow is more effective. One helpful strategy is to be amused, intrigued, bemused, astonished and curious about what your mind is doing, even if it’s doing something painful. Have a sense of humor about the absurdity of a mind’s proclivities.

Bringing these competing pleasant emotions into the picture will help you manage whatever your mind is tossing at you. Being amused will help you disidentify with the tides of your mind. And that will leave you more at peace. Have fun, be awesome. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Road and Mountain Biking

We had .6” of rain yesterday, giving us 3.85” of rain in the water year. The water year started October 1st. This is a lot of rain in two weeks. Our trails are wet. Syncline is your best option. Leave Post Canyon and Whoopdee alone today, pretty please. In road biking news, you might find today a nice day for the Petersburg Loop in The Dalles. Although… the wind will pick up midday, so be prepared for that.

Upcoming Events

It’s Harvest Fest down at the Hood River Event Site this weekend, all weekend long. There are three free yoga classes today: 9am at Samadhi in White Salmon, 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, 6pm restorative yoga at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s pickup touch rugby at 3 at the Mosier School and Pickup Ultimate Frisbee at 5 at Westside Elementary.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
