Gorge Wind Forecast

Good morning, everyone! I’ve gotten very distracted by the text machine this morning, but I’m turning it on silent now and getting this forecast out. Thanks to a series of weak frontal systems and weak thermal support, we’ll have gusty westerlies of the usable variety today, tomorrow, and Tuesday. Wednesday looks really iffy, and we’ll lose the westerlies Thursday through Saturday. Sunday: totally up in the air with a high temp forecast of 82-94.

Today (it’s Sunday) is marked by the approach of an offshore cold front. This should help keep temps down a bit in the west while the desert heats up. Early pressures were 30.05/30.01/30.03 for W 0.04 and E 0.02. Side note: we have reached the time of year when early pressures don’t necessarily translate to early wind. Something about the chill in the air… Anyway, by late morning, we should have 16-19 from Stevenson to Hood River. Wait a little longer for gusty 20-23 from Viento to Doug’s with 17-20 at Stevenson and 14-17 at Avery. Models hold Stevenson (may overperform… actually, probably will!) to Hood River at 14-17 in the afternoon with gusty 22-25 from Mosier to Avery and 19-22, maybe a bit more, at Rufus. River flow yesterday was 71-93kcfs, river temp is 69F, and high temp forecast is 85F.

Monday sees a cold front swing through in the morning. This starts the day with gusty 17-20ish from Viento to Mosier with 10-13 east of Mosier to Arlington. Thanks to clouds, Stevenson starts light. Late morning or early afternoon sees the wind rise to 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 10-13 to the east. Afternoon: 23-26 from Mosier to Rufus with 14-17 from Stevenson to Hood River. East of Rufus: not much. High temp: 76F. It’s worth noting that there’s actually a fair bit of uncertainty in model depictions of wind strength on Monday, so we could see changes tomorrow.

Better agreement exists for Tuesday. If you’re looking for stronger wind, you’ll have to wait and wait and wait. Don’t care so much? The day is open to you. Dawn Patrol wind will be just 11-14 from Viento to Arlington with calm-ish wind at Stevenson. A front pushes in during the day and reinforces the clouds on the west side. Late morning westerlies rise to 15-18 from Stevenson to Arlington then 20-23 from Viento to Arlington as those clouds build on the west side. Wait until late afternoon, and you’ll find gusty 24-28 from Viento to Rufus. Models are actually pretty certain of this. High temp: 77F.

Looking deeper into the future… high pressure starts to build on Wednesday. This leaves us with just 11-14 and only from Stevenson to Viento or maybe Swell. Thursday: light/variable. Friday and Saturday: easterlies of undetermined strength. Sunday’s totally up in the air – the heat wave may end, and it may stick around. At some point, we’ll have a cooldown and accompanying westerlies of some sort. Let’s leave it here for today. Have a great day on the river!

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas

Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas: powdery mildew is making an appearance in local gardens. It’s a real PITA. You could spray sulfur on it, but there’s a better solution. Quite a bit of research has been done on milk. Yes, milk. Spray a solution of 40% milk on your squash, cukes, melons, calendula, and other susceptible plants. Do this weekly. You can alternate with a baking soda solution:1 tablespoon of baking soda, 1/2 teaspoon of liquid non-detergent soap, and 1 gallon of water. Don’t forget to spray the undersides of the leaves. Also helpful: pruning plants so they get plenty of air flow. Happy gardening.
