Gorge Wind Forecast
Three days of westerlies are on tap, but the wind strength is bouncing around a bit in the predictions. One thing that’s for sure: cooler temps and cleaner air over the next few days.
Sunday morning starts with smoke and high clouds and westerlies in the 14-17 range from Viento to Hood River. Out east: 10-13. Gradients are 0.10 and 0.03. A front offshore will nudge the speeds upward and the quality downward later today. Expect a quick build to 20-23 between Stevenson and Hood River this morning with 14-17 to The Dalles starting late morning. It’s likely the Stevenson to Hood River stretch will drop to 14-17 in the afternoon thanks to that offshore impulse. That’s okay if you have transport; the wind will rise to gusty 25-28 from Mosier to Arlington this afternoon. River flow is 106kcfs. River temp is 71F. High temp forecast is 93F (Hood River) and 101F (Biggs).
The approaching front swings inland on Monday. Combine that with building high pressure offshore, a solid heat low in the desert, and excellent cross-Cascade temp gradients for a windy day. It starts with dawn patrol at 21-24 from Viento to Moiser with 10-13 in the eastern Gorge. By late morning, the wind rises to gusty 25-28 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 20-23 at Arlington. That’s not the end of it. Afternoon wind holds at 25-28 from Stevenson to Doug’s (maybe – clouds pushing in could knock the wind down into the upper teens or low 20’s west of Mosier) and climbs to 28-32 from Avery to Threemile. High temps will be 82F (Hood River) and 88F (Biggs).
High temps drop into the 70’s on Tuesday and marine clouds fill to Hood River in the morning. Westerlies start at gusty 20-25 from Viento to Hood River with 22-25 at Mosier and 12-15 to the east. 22-25 holds through early afternoon in the west and fills to Rufus in the evening. The western Gorge drops off after 2pm or so and lands in the 12-15 range. High temp: just 75F in Hood River and 77F at Biggs. The extended forecast suggests a light start on Wednesday with low teens in the afternoon. Mid-20’s are forecast for Thursday and Friday, but that forecast is likely to change. Enjoy your Sunday!

SDS (Whoopdee, Underwood), BLC, HFM, DGS, and Kreps Land (Hospital Hill) are now closed until the end of fire season. It is also vital that people respect this closure to maintain positive relationships between the landowners and trail users. DNR land in Eastern Washington (Buck Creek / Nestor Peak) is all closed to recreation due to fire danger.
Open trails: Post, Falls Creek, Lewis River, Sandy Ridge, Columbia Hills, Gorge 400, Plains of Abraham / Ape Canyon. 44 Road: Eightmile, Fifteenmile, Bottle Prairie, Dog River, Superconnector, Cedar, Knebal, Cooks Meadows, 450 to the top, Gunsight, Underhill. Maple Road in Post Canyon is closed. DO NOT drive past the closed signs. If you do so, you will jeopardize TRAIL access for the entire summer. This is the road that runs to the west, just north of the Binns/Riorden intersection. Also, the trail from the bottom of Post Canyon to Seven Streams Staging Area is now closed. It’s on private land. Respect the closure.
