Sunday. We got .25″ of rain on Saturday. Go ride your mountain bike!

It’s Sunday, and it’s a light wind morning on the Columbia. Breezes are just breezing in the 5-10 range, but they’ll pick up as this lingering cold front escapes the region. Or maybe as the region escapes the influence of the lingering cold front. Either way, expect west wind at 5-10 this morning, rising to…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

By later this afternoon, we should see 23-26 from the end of the low clouds (Rowena?) to Arlington. Under the little fluffy clouds in the western Gorge, the wind will linger in the gusty 13-16 range. Gorge wind forecast, continued…

Monday sees an offshore high combine with an upper level low moving into Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, while a weak cold front has a close shave with the Oregon coast. With all those pieces coming together, it’s going to be a messy day on the water, messy meaning gusty and unreliable. Still, you’ll find some wind. Expect light and variable wind to start the day. An afternoon confluence of influences leaves us with 24-27 east of Mosier. Swell is a question mark on Monday, with gusty 22-25 likely. Same for Steven’s Locks.

Tuesday starts out with not-much-happening in the weather world. An approaching trough in the afternoon will bump up the wind speeds. Expect light and variable wind to start with 13-16 or so in the afternoon. Strongest wind will be found from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles on Tuesday. Wednesday currently looks light and variable to start with 15-18 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I have this sorta half-formed thought in my mind. Rather than waiting for it to coalesce, I’ll just write and see what happens.

We all have things we’d like to change about ourselves. Many of us also see ways we’d like our friends, coworkers or children to change. There are various approaches we can take to encourage change, but many of them involve negativity. Creating change through negativity (shaming, blaming, yelling, hitting, etc.) gives rise to more negativity: fear, terror, shame…

This goes for our attempts to create change in those around us. (Whether we should attempt to change those around us is definitely up for debate!) This especially applies to attempts to change ourselves. Harsh words and deprivation generally don’t give rise to positive outcomes. Just think about the last time you ate more than you planned, spending more time berating yourself afterwards than you did enjoying the meal.

When we punish ourselves, we learn to live from a place of fear. When we punish others, they learn to act from a place of fear. There are many studies across specialties showing that people need 4:1 positive feedback to thrive. You’re a people too, you know. Let go of some of the self-punishment and see if a little self-encouragment goes further. You’re awesome, you know. Treat yourself like it. Have an awesome day.

Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 51 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Look at all those pretty clouds this morning: high clouds, low clouds, big clouds, little clouds. We’ll see decreasing clouds and just a chance of sprinkles today with more sun later. Temps will be in the low 60’s early and the low 70’s this afternoon. Light wind early. Moderate later. 13% chance of rainbows. Monday looks partly cloudy but dry. There’s a damn fine chance of Nothing tomorrow morning – that’s what wet ground does. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the low 70’s in the afternoon. Light wind early. Moderate later. No rainbows. Tuesday looks partly cloudy and dry. Temps will be in the upper 40’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light wind. No rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

Whoopdee and Hospital are closed through the end of fire season, whenever that turns out to be. No, the end of fire season is not yet! However, we did get a quarter inch of rain on Saturday, and the mountains got much more. That means you’ll find epic dirt all over the place. Dust off your mountain bike and go ride!

Upcoming Events

Today’s community events start off with the Gorge Kids Triathlon at Hood River’s Waterfront Park. For the grownups, there are three by-donation yoga classes today: 9am at Samadhi, 4pm YogaFaith at Pure Yoga in The Dalles, and 6:30 restorative yoga at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s also pickup touch rugby today at 3 at the Mosier School and pickup ultimate Frisbee at 5 at Westside Elementary.

The Pacific Hermitage Pah Bah is today, 10:30 through 3pm at the White Salmon Grange. There’s a delicious meal (be there by 10:30 with a potluck item) followed by chanting and Dhamma talks and socializing with monks and laypeople.

Have an awesome day today!

Temira
