Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

“Strong-enough” westerlies continue for the next three days followed by a chance for stronger westerlies for the following three days. Temps drop from 80 on Sunday back into the 60’s by Tuesday and don’t warm up again until next weekend.

Sunday starts with blue sky, offshore high pressure, and a weak low with associated front heading into central BC. All this combines for increasing westerlies as the day goes on. Morning gradients of 0.09 and 0.01 suggest a Corridor day. Don’t be fooled. Everywhere is on the table this afternoon. Expect a slow start through late morning as the desert fights to warm up. By early afternoon, we’ll have 21-24 from Stevenson to Avery. That offshore front exerts more influence later; this knocks the western Gorge down to 13-16. From Mosier to Rufus, you’ll find gusty 23-26 this afternoon. Up for a longer drive? Arlington should make it to 17-20. River flow is 225kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 81F. Warm!

On to Monday. That front ups the marine influence over the western half of the state. Temps drop into the low 70’s. Out in the desert, temps remain at 80F. Add in offshore high pressure, and you have a solid westerly setup. Morning wind will be 21-24 from Viento to Mosier with 5-10 at cloudy Stevenson. From The Dalles to Rufus, you’ll awake to 13-16. Afternoon wind falls off to 14-17 in the western Gorge and picks up to 27-31 from Lyle to Boardman. High temp Hood River: 73F. Arlington: 79F.

Low pressure settles inland on Tuesday following the passage of a weak, damp cold front. You’ll be driving west to get out of the clouds and into the sun and wind. Morning westerlies start with drizzle. Expect 5-10 west of The Dalles and 12-15 east of there. Afternoon: 5-10 in the cloudy western Gorge and gusty 21-24 from Lyle to Threemile. High temp: 63F Hood River, 67F Arlington.

Looking at the rest of the week, we have uncertainty and unreliability. Models and their ensembles are far from agreeing. Generally speaking, Wednesday looks lighter and Thursday/Friday bring a chance for stronger wind. It’s going to be another fine week of windsport. Have a great time on the river!
