Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Easterlies stick around for Sunday morning and drop way off Sunday afternoon as the heat low starts to shift eastward. Monday brings light westerlies. We’ll be back to light easterlies on Tuesday and slightly stronger easterlies on Wednesday. Depending on the timing of a massive pattern shift, we could see moderate westerlies on Thursday and nuking westerlies on Friday. More details to come…

Sunday, however, starts with pressures of 29.91/30.08/30.10 for an east gradient of 0.17 PDX-DLS. Jump on it, because that gradient will fade quickly. Morning wind will be 30-40 near Rooster, 25-30 (once it gets going) at Stevenson, and 20-25 at Viento. The wind starts to fade by 11am and falls quickly to 15-20 at Viento, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 25ish at Rooster. Afternoon wind drops to 10-15 all through the western Gorge. River flow readings are 70-81kcfs. Start temps: 68 at Rooster, 60 at Stevenson, 56 at Viento. High temp forecast: 81F.

Monday sees the heat low move over the Cascades and Central Oregon. This turns the wind weakly onshore. An offshore low adds exactly nothing to this picture – we’d much prefer to see offshore high pressure. As of this morning’s model run, we’re looking at westerlies in the 16-19 range to start the day at Viento. The deterministic GFS suggests the wind will fill in from Stevenson to Hood River. Expect it to be gusty and unreliable. High temp: 75F. The flow turns offshore again on Tuesday for easterlies at 10-15mph. Slightly stronger east wind is forecast Wednesday. Thursday is timing dependent, but we could see westerlies in the low to mid 20’s.

The timing isn’t yet clear for the massive pattern shift coming at the end of this week and next weekend. As of this morning, models agree on strong offshore high pressure building, probably on Thursday night into Friday. Frontal systems swing around this thing from the north. This is a decent setup, and indeed, both the GFS and ECMWF deterministic models call for a nuker on Friday. However… the GFS gives us morning nuking westerlies, and the Euro waits until late in the day or perhaps the evening. So… timing matters, but let’s definitely keep a close eye on Friday!

Cycling

It’s dusty out there… Hood River County has reopened all motorized trails to motorized use. Hospital Hill, Underwood, and Whoopdee have reopened. Rifle deer season is open in both Oregon and Washington, so consider wearing safety colors while you’re riding.

The road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
