Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Yesterday afternoon brought a special surprise – not only did the wind die (as predicted), it turned around to easterly (not predicted). That made for a particularly brutal downwind run from Viento for those of us caught in it. Nothing of that sort will happen today, thankfully! All that’s on tap are strong westerlies in the desert this afternoon.

Looking at Sunday’s details… A low pressure trough currently in Nevada makes a beeline north this afternoon. High pressure off the California coast contributes to large-scale gradients. A weak trough off WA/BC will be a mitigating factor for wind strength. All that jargon leads us to this: morning westerlies at 10-13 most places quickly build to gusty 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier with 25-29 from Lyle to Arlington. As that low gets farther north, the wind picks up to 30-35 from Avery to Threemile or Boardman; do be aware of afternoon thunderstorm chances in the eastern desert. They could negatively impact wind quality especially way out east. River flow is 217kcfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 64F for Hood River.

Rain moves into the western Gorge on Monday morning and sticks around all day. Showers are also possible on and off in areas east of the Cascades too. Add in a chance of thunder in the afternoon and a cold front in the morning for a very active day. Westerlies start light in the western Gorge and gusty 20-23 from Avery to Boardman. That’s pretty much the picture all day long. High temp: 64F.

Inland low pressure on Tuesday keeps the clouds and rain showers going. Westerlies start at 12-15 east of The Dalles with light wind to the west. Stevenson builds to 12-15 midday, and the wind picks up to 21-24 from Viento to Rufus. Afternoon wind drops back into the teens in the western Gorge as showers develop. East of the The Dalles, expect gusty 24-27. Active weather continues through Friday, making the forecast unreliable. Enjoy your day on the river today!
