Gorge Wind Forecast
The Euro definitely did a better job than the GFS with the forecast yesterday, even if it was a little overenthusiastic with the wind. Looking at the temp and wind forecasts today, the GFS looks right on and the Euro looks off in la-la land. Thermal low pressure sets up over the Willy-V, turning gradients slightly offshore all day. We’ll see east 10-15 between Stevenson and Viento with calm wind everywhere else to start the day. Rooster does not appear to join in the east wind fun today, so continue with your naked BBQs and such. Locations eastward from Viento to Mosier should see midday easterlies up to 5mph, making for a nice downwind/downcurrent paddle. High temp: 101. River flow: 130kcfs. River temp: 68 degrees.
Our friendly local thermal low shifts east of the Cascades on Monday. Cross-Cascade gradients pick up due to this fortunate turn of events. We start with W 5 from Stevenson to Swell. We’ll see a slow build in the wind as the heat low moves east. By mid-afternoon, we should have blowdryer westerlies (98 degrees) of 17-21 from Stevenson to The Dalles. Out east: doldrums under the heat low.
Slightly more marine air makes in into the west side on Tuesday, and the hottest heat shifts a touch more east. That allows a 17-20 start from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon westerlies at 24-27 fill in from Stevenson to The Dalles with 20-23 at Rufus and 10-13 at Arlington. Watch out for fire danger. The Euro and the GFS have been consistently predicting strong westerlies for Wednesday and Thursday.
BONUS: Jones Sunday: 12-15. Monday: 21-24. Tuesday: 24-27. Sauvie’s Sunday: 15-18 late. Monday: 16-19 late. Tuesday: 10-13. Coast (north/central/south). Sunday: 10-15/10-15/20-25, NW swell 5-7′ at 8 seconds. Monday: 5-10/5-10/25-30, NW 6-7′ at 8 seconds. Tuesday: 5/5-10/25-30/NW 7′ @ 8.
