Mt. Hood Weather Forecast
Snow continues to accumulate on the mountain through Wednesday with the exception of Monday night, when a round of messy mixed precipitation is likely. Models then suggest warmer weather starting late Wednesday, but the spread is wide and there’s no clarity on whether we’ll see rain or not. Setting aside the distant future, it sure does look lovely on all the mountain webcams today. There’s snow all the way from the base of Skibowl on up, and it’ll continue to accumulate.
Sunday starts with light orographic show showers. Snowfall picks up overnight. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 2000-2500′ overnight. About 0.2” water equivalent (WE) is forecast during the day. Call it 2” new. Another 0.5” WE is forecast tonight for 5-6” powder. Wind: WSW 25 this morning, SW 15-30 this afternoon, and WSW 25-30 overnight.
Monday daytime looks dry, but the temps will be rising. We’ll see the 850mb temp rise from -1C early to a peak of +5C in the evening. The snow level will also rise. 2000′ in the morning. 6500′ in the evening, 6000′ after midnight. About 0.7” WE is forecast overnight. That’s going to be mixed precip- probably some freezing rain to start too. Wind: SW 10-20 becoming SE 20-30 in the afternoon and rising to SW 40-65 overnight.
Tuesday starts with rain and quickly transitions to snow, then a shot at clear sky in the afternoon, and then snow overnight. The snow level will be 6000′ early, 4000′ around sunrise and 2500′ from early afternoon on. About 0.7” WE is forecast in the morning. Most of that will probably fall as rain, but a couple inches of cement-like snow at the end are likely. Another 0.1” to 0.2” WE is forecast overnight for a couple more inches of lighter, fluffier snow. Wind will be SW 40-65 for much of the daylight hours. It turns to WSW 35-40 in the afternoon, SW 20-40 in the evening, and W 40 after midnight. That sets us up with light orographic snowfall and another inch or two on Wednesday.
By Wednesday afternoon, models introduce significant uncertainty as to temps and precipitation. Generally speaking, they’re calling for warmer weather. The Euro and GFS ensembles are both about 50% in on rain for the latter half of the week, and they’re about 20% in on the Pineapple Express aka atmospheric river. We’ll just have to wait and see. In the meantime, enjoy those snowy webcam views!
Gorge Wind Forecast
Sunday starts off dead calm and quiet. Westerlies pick up to gusty, unreliable 13-16 east of The Dalles between noon and 4pm or so. In the western Gorge, you’ll find rain and light wind. River flow is 36,600cfs, river temp is 55F, and high temp forecast is 49F. Monday will be dry, and you’ll have a chance at afternoon easterlies. The wind starts light and variable. By afternoon, it builds to 30-35 at Rooster and Stevenson with 20-30 at Viento, 5-10 in Hood River, and 10-15 east of Mosier. The wind jumps a bit more in the evening thanks to an offshore low. Unfortunately, it will be dark by then. High temp: 51F. Tuesday brings gusty westerlies. You’ll find gusty 20-30 from Multnomah Falls to Viento to start with calm wind in the central Gorge and gusty 19-25 out east. The wind picks up to gusty 24-28 from Stevenson (rainy) to Arlington (dry) for the morning and fades in the afternoon becoming nearly calm after 4pm. High temp: 49F.
Coast, Jones, Coast
Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.
Hood River Weather Forecast
Nothing cloud this morning turns rainy after noon and stays that way through sunset. Showers follow. Temps will be in the upper 30’s early and upper 40’s later. Light westerlies. 3% chance of rainbows. Monday will be dry and cloudy during the day with moderate to heavy rain overnight. Temps will be in the mid 30’s early and low 50’s later. Light wind early. Moderate easterlies later. No rainbows. Tuesday will be rainy early then sprinkly then rainy. Temps will be near 40 early and in the upper 40’s later. Moderate to strong westerlies. 99.99% chance of rainbows. 99% chance of doubles.

Significant rain in the last week means most trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. Also note: it’s been snowing above 2000′, so higher elevation trails may have significant snowfall. Be prepared if you’re heading up high.
