Gorge Wind Forecast
Hi friends! It was wacky out there on the river when I woke up this morning, and models weren’t handling things well. This is pretty typical of fall (and spring, sometimes) – models just aren’t as reliable, which means forecasts aren’t either. We’ll talk more about today in a bit (and I”ll try to hit “send” on the forecast when it’s done, not hours later). After today, we’ll have a lot of back-and-forth with the wind, and even a couple of days where both wind directions will be strong enough for wind sports! Temps this week will generally max out around 70.

Sunday started with pressures of 30.24/30.13/30.03 (actually, they were lower by quite a bit an hour ago and are rising rapidly). A weak system will have some impact early. This is followed by rapidly increasing pressures across the region. In theory, that should knock the wind speeds down. However, winds aloft are quite strong. Models, unfortunately, are all over the place for today, so this is really guesswork. To give you an idea of how trick this is, I’ll share the 7:20am wind speeds near Rufus: 35mph at Maryhill Bridge and 7mph at The Wall with 26mph at John Day Dam. Okay, here’s my best guess: 20-23mph from Stevenson to Hood River this morning with 25-28 at Viento. Lyle to Doug’s: 17-20. Rufus to Arlington: 30-33. Models suggest the Stevenson to Mosier zone will level out around 20-23 this afternoon. The GFS 12k shuts down the wind out east. The higher-resolution model keeps the wind cranking at 25-28 from Lyle to Arlington. I dunno, y’all. It’s just a weird day. I’d call this a low-reliability forecast. River flow over the last 24 hours was 64-71kcfs, river temp is 67.10F, and high temp forecast is 65F for Hood River and 68F for Arlington.
A much easier forecast is on deck for Monday: easterlies. The day starts with 25-28 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock, 22-25 near Stevenson, and 18-22 at Viento. That’s the morning plan. The wind slowly fades in the afternoon. Iwash drops to 20-23, Stevenson to 17-20, and Viento to 12-15. High temp: 68F.

Tuesday starts with E 30-35 at Iwash and 15-18 near Stevenson. The wind drops quickly, goes calm early afternoon, and turns westerly later afternoon. The westerly switch often happens later than expected (see: yesterday). If it works out just right, we’ll have 17-20 from Stevenson to Mosier. High temp forecast is nearly 80F.

Extended: Wednesday looks to start with westerlies and switch to easterlies. Thursday brings east wind. Friday looks like west wind. Given the model struggles this time of year, I’ll hold off on trying to peg down the details for now. As for next weekend… models are starting to coalesce around warmer/dry, but there are still a fair number of ensembles members that would prefer cold/wet. Have a great day today!

Cycling
All vehicles on HR County forest roads need a gallon of water and a shovel – it’s fire season. Please see the HRATS/Hood River County for complete details on Post Canyon closures. Newly reopened in Post: lower Trail 100 paralleling the lower part of Post Canyon Road. The Twin Tunnels Trail between Hood River and Mosier is closed due to wildfire. That means you, all of you who’ve been riding it. Kreps and Green Diamond Lands have reopened. That includes Whoopdee, Hospital Hill, and Underwood. Closed: Gorge 400 and lots of other trails due to the Whisky Creek Fire. Trail near Mt. Adams due to the Williams Mine Fire. Remember that E-bikes are not allowed on USFS non-moto trails. They are allowed on moto trails.
