Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

It’s Sunday morning, and it’s the start of an extended cold snap for the mountain. This period of winter will start with light snowfall, turn dry midweek, and then turn quite snowy starting next Thursday. We’re not going to get a lot of snow, but it should be enough to take the groomed surfaces back to packed powder.

For Sunday, steady light snowfall continues for the 24 hour period. The snow level starts around 2000′ and drops to 0′ overnight. Precip will be 0.2” water value (WV) during the day, for 2-3” of dry snow. Overnight precip of 0.1-0.2” WV results in 1-3” of powder, likely the low end. Wind will be WSW 25 in the morning, SW 20 in the afternoon, and SSW 15 overnight.

Snowfall continues Monday during the day, backs off in the afternoon, and picks up again overnight. Temps plummet on Monday with mountain highs forecast to be in the teens. Snow level: 0′ all day. Precip: 0.2” WV during the day, for 2-3” of powder. Another 0.1” WV falls overnight for another inch of snow. Wind will be SSW 15 early, SW 5-10 in the afternoon, and N 30 overnight. That wind could really decrease the quality of the snow surface on Tuesday morning. Northerly wind will also dry out the atmosphere and return clear sky to the region.

So, for Tuesday, expect a few flurries in the morning followed by clear sky. The snow level will be at the surface with mountain temps in the upper single digits. Wind will be N 30 early (wind chill = very cold!) in the morning and N 15-20 in the afternoon and evening. Wednesday also looks clear, but temps will warm into the 20’s and the wind will back off. Snowfall returns on Thursday and looks to stick around through next weekend, creating excellent conditions on the mountain and a giant mess in the city!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Sunday starts with west wind and turns easterly overnight. Early westerlies at 17-21 from Stevenson to Hood River shift to 17-21 from The Dalles to Arlington mid-morning (10-13 in the west) and goes calm by noon. Easterlies pick up through the whole Gorge in the evening, with 20-25 from Rooster to Stevenson, light near HR, and 20-25 from The Dalles eastward as cold air pours into the Gorge. Monday’s wind looks like Sunday night, turning calm east of Hood River and holding at E 20-25 near Rooster and Stevenson. Tuesday brings light easterlies, and Wednesday looks like E 20-25.

Road and Mountain Biking

If you enjoy biking without snow, you’ll want to bike today. Snow arrives tomorrow and doesn’t go away for a long time. After tomorrow, most trails should remain frozen (exception: Syncline in the freeze-thaw), meaning your fat bike might be worth a try. However, temps will be quite cold. It may be a good week for the gym.
