Sunday: tack alert and brown pow for all the trails coming soon!

Thank you for using this forecast. I offer it freely so you can have more fun and plan your life. It does take significant time and energy to produce. If you find yourself using it often, or if you feel your life is more awesome because of my work, please make a donation. You can…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Not much wind to speak of the next few days, which is awesome if you want to go fishing or pick fruit, but not so awesome if you want to do wind sports. “Progressive” weather continues for the next week or so, with the best chance for stronger, steadier wind currently Friday. However, that’s far from guaranteed and way too far out to be forecasting! So… great thing for me: alternate day forecasts for a bit!

For Sunday, the wind starts light and variable except near Viento and Swell, where there will be some 10-15ish, as is common ahead of an incoming system. Gradients are too light for much more in the morning: 0.02 and 0.03. Rain starts up soon, dampening (ha) any chances for westerlies. Between noon and 4pm or so, areas east of Avery will see very gusty 22-26. You’ll have to time it just right, because rain pushes way out east in the afternoon and shuts down the wind.

Monday starts light and variable. Afternoon wind picks up to gusty 13-16 from Viento to Arlington. 13-16 might be a bit optimistic; it’s possible the wind will languish in the 10-13 range. Tuesday starts light and variable and turns to light easterly midday. It might even become light westerly late in the afternoon. By “light”, I mean less than 8mph. Thursday starts light and variable and picks up to 10-13, but there’s been a lot of variability in that forecast; at one point it was calling for 23-26 with offshore high pressure driving the wind. So, let’s wait and see.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified – swell forecast courtesy of National Weather Service). Sunday: LTSW/LTSW/LTV, W swell 8′ at 12 seconds. Monday: W5-10/W5-10/S10-15, W 8′ @ 11. Tuesday: SW15-20/SW15-20/S25-30, “combined season 10′ at 11 seconds”. Jones Sunday-Tuesday: nope. Sauvie’s Sunday-Monday: nope. Sauvie’s Tuesday: S 15-25.

Road and Mountain Biking

130,140, Borderline, and the jump trails in that area will close for logging on Monday, so ride them today. Upper 8 Track in Post Canyon is now closed due to logging. 130 after Borderline is also closed due to logging. Not sure how far that closure goes. Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest and also on Kingsley Road, if you’d like to suffer. As for Kreps/SDS lands… they have remained open all summer, for the first time in a long time! Sounds like moto in Post may reopen at the beginning of next week, depending on how much rain falls over the weekend.

All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.

Upcoming Events

If you do want to get outside today, get out early. Steady rain starts up around 9 near Hood River, noon near The Dalles, and 4 near Arlington. Line yourself up north-south with those places for your rain. The next round of heavy rain arrives Tuesday morning and sticks around all day.

Today’s events include the Gorge Kids Triathlon at the Hood River Waterfront Park starting at 9am – hopefully it beats the rain. There’s a $5 yoga class at Samadhi in White Salmon at 9am too. That’s it for this weekend – looking at next weekend, there’s a Mt. Hood Cleanup on Saturday and a fundraiser run for Hood River’s Cross Country Team on Sunday.
