Gorge Wind Forecast

Low pressure offshore and overhead keeps the wind from gathering much steam today. Monday’s a bit of a crapshoot as atmospheric instability raises the chances of thunderstorms. From Tuesday on through Thursday, a more stable setup makes for stronger, steadier westerlies.

For Sunday, we start with gradients of .06 and .03, a sign that something (rather than nothing!) will happen on the river today. River flow is 132kcfs and river temp is 63 degrees. We’ll see morning wind in the 5-8 range in most places with 11-14ish from Viento to Swell. There’s not much assistance in any form today; even so, westerlies pick up to 14-17 or so from Stevenson to Mosier in the afternoon.

Offshore low pressure moves inland east of the Cascades on Monday afternoon, setting up stronger gradients. Instability accompanies this movement, and that’s reflected in the model forecasts. While the GFS likes the idea of 30-35 from Stevenson to Rufus from mid-afternoon on, the Euro is really having nothing to do with this. Instead, it’s calling for teens in the west and mid 20’s out east. Various factors (see TATAS) point at thunderstorm development. So… watch the river in the afternoon. If giant whitecaps appear, get out there! Best chance for an undisturbed wind field will be in the eastern Gorge, where thunder is less likely.

Pesky Low moves inland on Tuesday. Marine clouds fill the metro area and the western Gorge. Those burn off in the afternoon for a quality westerly day. Morning wind starts at 12-15 in the east and west and 24-27 from Viento to Rufus. Afternoon westerlies: 27-31 from Stevenson to Arlington. Guess who has Tuesday off? Me! Yay! See you on the river. Longer range: models aren’t quite in agreement for Wednesday and Thursday, but upper teens to mid-twenties is the range for now.

COAST, JONES, SAUVIE’S: Coast (north/central/south, wind N unless otherwise specified). Sunday: 10-15/10-15/20-25, NW swell 2′ at 8 seconds. Monday: 10/LTW/5-10, W 2′ @ 8. Tuesday: LTW/LTNW/20-25, SW 3′ @ 19. Jones Sunday: 20-23. Monday: 22-25. Tuesday: 5-8. Sauvie’s Sunday: 10-13 late. Monday: 5-8. Tuesday: nope.

Road and Mountain Biking

Post Canyon yesterday had brown pow from Family Man upwards! All local trails are snow-free. The only unconfirmed trail I have right now is Huffman Peak. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill!

Upcoming Events

Weekly events on Sundays include by-donation yoga at 9am at Yoga Samadhi in White Salmon. There’s ping pong for $5 at the Skamania County Fairgrounds at 10:30. For the kiddos out there, Columbia Center for the Arts has free art classes from 1-3, but you parents will have to stick around – this is family fun, not free babysitting. Today’s also the rainbow fun run at the Hood River Waterfront. Registration starts at 8am, and you’ll want to be dressed in your best pride and rainbow gear.

Coming up on the Fourth, there are two more footraces. Washougal has the annual Hero’s Run, and the Kollas Kranmer run goes from Odell to Hood River. Looking ahead to next weekend, there’s a watersports swap meet at Windance on Sunday, celebrating Canada Day and Independence Day.
