Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s a sunny, windy morning on the Columbia River. The GFS is still insisting that the wind will quickly fade today. With some marine clouds in Portland and a starting gradient of .08, I think the wind will stick around longer than the models suggest. Let’s go with 19-23 at least through early afternoon from Swell to Mosier with 12-15 at the Rowena stretch all day and 5-10 further east. Stevenson will be light this morning and 15-18 after the clouds burn off.
Monday starts with light west wind and builds slowly to 15-18 from Stevenson to The Dalles in the afternoon. Tuesday starts with light wind. Stronger high pressure over the region will probably knock the wind down a notch from Monday. Let’s go with W 10-13 on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday looks quite similar to Tuesday: light wind in the morning and W 12-15 in the afternoon.
River temp today is 51 degrees, and flow is a massive 431kcfs. No way is Rufus doable today!

Random Morning Thoughts
I’m sure you’ve all heard some sort of admonishment at some point to “stay in the moment”. Doing so allows you to fully experience life. Being present does something even more important: it allows you to stop bringing the past into the present.
For example, we all get into patterns in our relationships, romantic, friendly, collegial or otherwise. Once we know someone, we expect them to behave a certain way. However, people’s reactions to us are intertwined with our expectations of them. Trust me on that one. If we go into a conversation expecting one thing, our behaviors and speech and body language will convey that and bring about what we expect.
So, see if you can try, just one time, going into a conversation with someone you know well with no expectation. Try to stay fully present as they speak, letting yourself hear the exact words they are saying. Try and respond from a place of full awareness, with your mind on the task at hand, rather than multi-tasking. You might be surprised what’ll happen. I sure have been. It’s a fun thing to try, if nothing else, and it’ll increase your ability to be present for other conversations. Have an awesome day!
Disclaimer required by my grad school program: I am not your therapist (but I could be 40 graduate school credits from now). I am your weather forecaster. Take everything I say with a grain of salt, and consult with your actual therapist about your mental health issues. One other thing: I plan to keep doing this forecast indefinitely, even when I am a therapist.

White Sprinter Van of the Day
Road and Mountain Biking
Today is the Dog River Super D race, which means Dog River is open. Hopsital Hill is still no-dogs-allowed. There’s lots of very happy poison oak at Syncline. Post is clear to the bridge on the 170, although I saw a Strava ride from yesterday titled “Kingsley!!!”, so maybe it’s rideable higher up? No word yet on Surveyor’s, but I suspect downed trees. No word yet on Nestor from the top either. In road biking news, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday look awesome: high temps in the 70’s and light wind.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events include 3 free yoga classes: 9 at Samadhi, 4 at Pure Yoga The Dalles, and 6 at Pure Yoga Hood River. There’s pickup touch rugby for kids and adults at 11am at the Hood River Marina.
In a very last-minute move, the folks from Fat Tire Farm cleared the Dog River trail, so the race is on for today. Seems like a good time for a trail roundup: Post Canyon is open below the bridge on the 170 trail. Hospital Hill is open, but no dogs are allowed due to cattle being on the land. The Gorge 400 trail, believe it or not, still has patches of snow.
Speaking of trails next Saturday brings a trail work party in Post Canyon, the Cascade Chainbreaker mountain bike race in Bend, and the Stevenson to Carson Ridge Run.
Have an awesome day today!
