Mt. Hood Snow Forecast
It’s a cold and clear morning on Mt. Hood, and the snowpack is frozen solid and icy after yesterday’s rain. Will it warm up today? Maybe the steepest sun-exposed slopes will soften up this afternoon… Teh free air freezing level today will be around 1000′ early and 2500′ in the afternoon, dropping back to the surface in many locations overnight. No precip. Wind today will be NW 30 in the morning, NW 20 in the afternoon, and NW 15 after midnight.
Monday looks sunny and dry. The free air freezing level will be less than 500′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ after midnight. Wind on Monday will be NW 15 in the morning, light and variable in the afternoon, and SW 10 after midnight.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued
Some high clouds move in on Tuesday to alternate with sunshine. It still looks like a dry day. The free air freezing level will be 5500′ in the morning, 6500′ in the afternoon, and 9000′ overnight. Wind on Tuesday will be SW 10 in the morning, slowly rising to SW 20 in the evening.
Wednesday starts off sunny and turns cloudy in the afternoon and evening ahead of a slow-approaching weather system slated for Thursday. The free air freezing level will be around 9000′ on Wednesday, dropping to 7000′ after midnight. Wind on Wednesday will be SW 20 early, turning to S 15 in the afternoon and evening.
Looking long range, the GFS and Euro both send wetter weather this way for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The GFS has the snow level at 5500′ on Thursday, but the Euro is warmer. Both models predict snow on Friday and Saturday, but the snow amounts are vastly different. That’s the general picture. We’ll have to wait and see how the details settle out.

Gorge Wind Forecast
We’re starting off Sunday with a pretty ideal setup for central Gorge wind: high pressure offshore and lower pressure in the desert. A weak weather system passing to the north later today will probably decrease wind quality this afternoon, but all-in-all, it looks like a good day on the river. Water temp is 44, and flow is a blistering 474kcfs (no Maryhill for you today!). 5am gradients were .10 (pdx-dls) and .10 (dls-psc).
Expect Dawn Patrol on Sunday morning at 24-28 from Mosier to Doug’s. Judging by the early morning cloud line, it’s looking likely that we’ll see 24-28 from Swell to Rufus by early afternoon. Stevenson may or may not emerge from the clouds, leaving it guesswork… probably 15-18 this afternoon, maybe 20-23. Arlington will probably max out at 24-27 today. Now, let’s talk about that weather system: as it moves through late morning or early afternoon, it’s probably going to knock down wind speed and quality between Swell and Doug’s. Better bets at that point are Stevenson (if it’s sunny), Avery (how’s that with this much flow?), and Arlington. Models suggest better wind quality will return late in the afternoon.
Enough about Sunday. Monday looks like W 10-13 all day from Stevenson to Mosier. Tuesday looks like E 25-30 early, dropping to zero wind by midday.

Random Morning Thoughts
One of the ways that our minds keep us moving quickly through life is by predicting the future (even just a second from now) based on our past experiences. When we allow this process to manage our experience, we are set up to repeat the patterns of the past. We also lose out on much of the vitality of life. Let’s make this more concrete, shall we?
Let’s say you’re riding your bike up State Road in Mosier (it’s steep). You know from past experience that this hill hurts. You expect it to hurt. You tense up, using more energy than necessary. And so the hill hurts, confirming your expectations. However, if you’d really checked in with your body, you might have noticed that your legs weren’t hurting, or that your legs were hurting or your lungs weren’t, or perhaps you would have looked around and saw a bazillion grass widows, distracting you from your pain and leading to a lovely experience on the hill.
We do this all the time, unconsciously, with almost all of our experiences. If we can stop and really connect with what’s happening in a given moment, we might find that our experience contradicts our expectations. Or we may notice the expectations we have. By noticing them, we are able to work around them and have a different experience. That different experience will be, simply because it is new, more interesting, vibrant and engaging. And who doesn’t want a life with those qualities?!
All ya gotta do is learn to be in the moment and notice what’s really happening, not what you expect to happen. You’re awesome. Have an awesome day.
