Gorge Wind Forecast
It’s Labour Day Sunday, and it’s a calm and clear start to the day. Models are having some serious disagreements on the wind speed for today and tomorrow, so I’m just going to give you a best guess forecast. Tuesday and Wednesday both look like east wind days. After that, the wind will switch back to westerly.
Sunday starts out with light wind and a gradient of .06 from Portland to The Dalles. Northerly upper level flow and a front approaching late in the day from the north combine to give us gusty west wind today, strongest late in the day. We’ll see a slow and steady build in the wind. Expect 12-15 from Stevenson to Mosier by late morning. Westerlies continue to build through the day, topping out at gusty 21-25 from Stevenosn to Doug’s this afternoon. Given the northerly flow and the approaching front, the Swell to Mosier stretch is likely to be lighter and gustier than other areas.
Labour Day starts with 15-18 from Viento to Mosier, hopefully a bit lighter between Wells and Bingen for the Cross-Channel Swim. As the previously mentioned frontal system swings through midday, the wind will pick up to up-and-down, very gusty 18-22 from Viento to Doug’s with gusty 15-18 near Stevenson.
Building high pressure on Tuesday turns the wind around. We’ll have easterlies at 15-20 on tuesday and 20-25 on Wednesday, strongest from Rooster Rock to Home Valley. The best wind will be between 10am and 1pm both days, with light wind in the afternoons. After Wednesday, the weather turns a bit more progressive: onshore flow, cloudier, cooler, etc.
BONUS: Jones Sunday: 18-21. Monday: 12-15. Tuesday: nope. Sauvie’s Sunday: 15-19. Monday: 14-17. Tuesday: 17-20. Coast (north/central/south). Sunday: 15-20/25-30/35+, W swell 3′ at 12 seconds. Monday: 20-25/25-30/35+, W 5′ @ 9. Tuesday: 20-25/20-25/30+, NW 6′ @ 9.
