Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Several days of dry, sunny weather are in the forecast. They’ll be followed by another round of snow. For Sunday, expect early morning clouds to give way to sun soon after sunrise. The free air freezing level will be 2500′ early, 3000′ in the afternoon, and will fall to near 0′ overnight. No precip. Wind: SSW 10-20 early, S 10-20 from mid-morning on, and SSE 10 overnight.

Monday looks sunny and dry. The free air freezing level will be 0′ early, 6000′ in the afternoon, and 5500′ overnight. Slope-side temps will be in the upper 20’s. Wind: SSE 10 early, NW 10-15 in the afternoon, and NW 25-30 overnight.

Tuesday starts out sunny. High clouds arrive mid-afternoon and deepen overnight. The free air freezing level will be 5500′ early, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 1000′ overnight with a snow level of about 5500. Slopeside temps will be in the upper 20’s to low 30’s. Wind: NW 25-30 in the morning, W 25 in the afternoon, and W 20 overnight.

As of this morning, it appears we’ll see significant snow between Wednesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon. The details aren’t yet clear, but 1-2 feet seem possible. Happy shredding!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
