Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

After a couple of sunny days, we’re headed back to snowfall starting Sunday afternoon or evening. Light snowfall sticks around most of this upcoming week; models have somewhere between 1” and 2” total water equivalent for the week, or a foot or two of snow. Honestly, given the setup, that sounds optimistic, but let’s go with it for now.

Saturday night will be partly cloudy, and Sunday starts off clear. The snow softened in at least some areas on Saturday, but it’ll snap as the sun goes down and be quite firm to start Sunday. Sharpen those edges! Clouds move in during the afternoon, and snow starts up late afternoon. The snow level will be 2000′ to start Sunday, 3000′ in the afternoon, and 2000′ overnight with temps in the upper 20’s to low 30’s at 5000′. Models drag in about 0.25” to 0.7” water equivalent overnight. Why the range? Thank the direction of the system (from the south) and the potential for easterly orographic enhancement of snowfall. Let’s call if 5”, give or take. Easterlies will make “leeward” opposite of what it usually is. Speaking of… the wind will be light easterly in the morning. It’ll rise to E 30 in the afternoon and turn to S 15-25 overnight. E30 may be enough to affect some lift ops in the afternoon, especially at Timberline. They’re really affected by that wind direction.

Monday brings additional light snowfall. The snow level will be 2000′ in the morning, 4000′ in the afternoon, and 3000′ overnight. About 0.2” WE is forecast during the day, for a couple inches of new snow. Overnight, about 0.1” WE is forecast. That gives us one more inch. Wind: S 15-25 at elevation (E20 down low) in the morning, SW 10-20 in the afternoon, and W 15 after midnight. Tuesday looks mostly sunny with a few flurries to start and a few flurries to end. Wind will be W 10-20. Additional light to moderate snowfall is forecast Wednesday, probably. Uncertainty increases around that time frame. Best if we leave it there for now. See you on the snow Sunday!

Cycling

Regarding the trails in general: don’t ride in the mud. You’ll damage the trails. Don’t ride trails if it was below freezing the previous night and is above freezing when you want to ride. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
