Gorge Wind Forecast
Another round of solid westerlies are on tap today. Drag your sore body out for one more day. The wind drops into the “moderate” range on Monday and “light” on Tuesday before surging back for the second half of next week. In other news: we have poopy water thanks to The Dalles Wastewater Treatment Plant. WA state parks closed Doug’s due to poopy water. Signs have been posted at Rowena. Other important news: today is the Bridge of the Gods Kitefest Blowout. ALL downwind objects are welcome to compete in the race from Stevenson to Hood River. Good luck, racers!
Marine air, evidenced by little fluffy clouds, pushed past Hood River this morning. Wind speeds are generally in the teens throughout the Gorge. Mosier: probably a bit windier to start, but hard to prove without a sensor. Early gradients were .09 (PDX-DLS) and .05 (DLS-PSC) with .03 (DLS-HMI). Expect the gradients to build as the desert heats up: Hermiston is forecast to hit 89, and Portland/Hood River just 75F. So. 14-17 everywhere to start. Midday: 22-25 from Viento to Mosier with 18-22 from Lyle to Rufus and 13-16 at Arlington/Stevenson. Afternoon wind keeps building. Expect 25-28 from Stevenson to (poopy and closed) Doug’s with 22-25 (and building) at Rufus with 18-22 at Arlington. Later: 27-32 from Lyle to Rufus with 25-29 at Arlington. Threemile: 18-22 in the afternoon with 25-29 in the evening. The western Gorge, Stevenson to Mosier, will likely hold at 25-28 once the marine clouds burn off. River flow readings are 186-238kcfs, river temp is 65F, and high temp forecast for Hood River is 75F. Arlington: 84F with patchy blowing dust.
Monday’s marine layer looks lackluster compare to Sunday’s. That allows Portland to achieve about 8F more than on Sunday. This knocks down the gradients. Dawn wind will be 8-11 from Stevenson to The Dalles with 14-17 east of The Dalles to Arlington. It won’t take long for the wind to go calm east of The Dalles. Midday westerlies should be 16-19ish from Stevenson to Mosier with 11-14 at Rufus. Afternoon: gusty 16-19 from Stevenson to The Dalles with light wind east of The Dalles. High temp: 83F.
Tuesday could start with westerlies at 10mph or so west of Hood River, but the wind will go light midday. Evening westerlies, thermally-driven, may climb to 13-16 between Stevenson and The Dalles. East of there: calm all day. High temp: 93F. The current forecast for Wednesday is 20-23. Cooler temps and stronger wind, perhaps 25-30, is currently forecast on Thursday. Let’s leave it there for now. Have a fantastic day on the river!

Cycling
Falls Creek is open. All the 44 Road trails are open with a couple of caveats: Lookout Mountain is clear. Fifteen Mile has lots of trees down. Plains of Abraham is open and is rideable. Also, the road connecting Plains of Abraham to Smith Creek closes at noon Monday-Friday and will not be open to bikers during that time. Courtney Road (the road that goes up above Syncline) is closed until October. Do not attempt to use it to access trails. If you’re riding Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
