Gorge Wind Forecast
The big-picture forecast for the next few days hasn’t been all that consistent, and that’s leading to uncertainty in the wind forecast too. Generally speaking, a broad area of low pressure offshore will keep the wind in the light-to-moderate range for a couple of days. Models have been all over the place with Tuesday. More on that in a bit.
For Sunday, early gradients were .06 and .01, and it was warm and muggy. That’s enough gradient and early-morning heat to indicate that you’ll want to be in the water at some point today. Dawn Patrol wind will be in the 17-20 range from Viento to Swell. We’ll see the wind pick up to 20-24 from Viento to Mosier by mid to late morning with 5-10 east of there and slowly building westerlies in Stevenson. Models indicate that Rufus will join in the fun later on; seems unlikely given the setup, but it’s worth watching if you’re looking for swell. Stevenson: maxes out at 15-18 today.
Offshore high pressure and accompanying “stuff” drags a few mid-level clouds into the Gorge on Monday, a day known as Labor Day here and Labour Day in Canada. Westerlies and easterlies start out null. In other words, the early morning looks light and variable. It appears that the wind will slowly build to 10-13 from Stevenson to Hood River with light wind east of there. Best chance of 10-13 is late in the day.
Yesterday’s forecast for Tuesday was zero-to-east. That’s made a 180 turn overnight, and now the forecast is for 21-24 from Stevenson to The Dalles. With this much change and uncertainty, it’s hard to know exactly what the wind will do for the day affectionately known as “Locals’ Day”.

Road and Mountain Biking
Approximately 0.2” of rain fell on Thursday, meaning some of our trails have been refreshed. Chipseal is good to go between Mosier and Rowena crest! Riorden Hill Road will remain closed from the end of the pavement to Family Man weekdays through the beginning of September. That means associated trails are also closed weekdays for that time period (Family Man, Middle School, Float On). As for Kreps/SDS lands… they haven’t issued a closure yet!
All other trails are open. Apparently Boulder Lakes is quite overgrown. Whoopdee is closed for logging, but Ronnoc trail and the climb out are open. Red Hill Road is supposedly closed for logging. Ride at your own risk. If you’re riding Underwood, please do not park at the trailhead as per request by SDS. Continue past the trailhead 0.5 miles or so to the new parking area. The cows are off Hospital Hill, which means your dog can come along.
Upcoming Events
Today’s events start off with a $5 yoga class at Samadhi in White Salmon – you’ll want to get there early for this one, as it tends to fill up. The Huckfest kiteboarding contest continues at East Beach in Stevenson today, taking advantage of the last day of westerlies for a bit.
Tomorrow is Labor Day, and hopefully you’ve got the day off. The Roy Webster Cross-Channel swim is tomorrow morning – there shouldn’t be any trouble with the wind – in Cascade Locks for the first time ever. Timberline has the free Grateful Dead – themed mountain music festival starting at noon tomorrow – they’re encouraging people to carpool, and dogs are not allowed. Tomorrow evening brings another round of Silent Disco at Hood River’s Waterfront Park from 4:30 to 7:30.
