Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

It was a very snowy night last night on Mt. Hood, and it’s going to be a very busy day on the slopes. But first – I forgot to tell y’all that I was on a meditation retreat this weekend and wouldn’t be forecasting. So I’m taking a break to get this forecast out. Update on Meadows: if you can’t wear your mask (properly), you’ll lose your pass for at least a couple of weeks. If you argue with the lifties about it, you’ll lose your pass and jeopardize future access. Come on, peeps, this isn’t that hard! Wear a mask and be nice! Now, on to the snow.

Sunday starts with orographic (terrain-enhanced) snowfall and ends up sunny. The next round of snow starts in the evening. The snow level will be about 2000′ this morning, 4000′ this evening, and will rise to 5500′ overnight. An inch or two of snow falls during the day, probably the lower end of that. About 0.3” water equivalent (WE) is forecast tonight, for 2-3” of increasingly wet snow. Wind: WNW 30 in the morning, SW 10-25 in the afternoon building to SW 25-55 overnight.

Monday starts with snow or mixed precip and transitions to drier snow in the afternoon. The snow level starts at 5500′, rises to 6000′ mid-morning, falls to 3500′ in the afternoon, and ends at 1500′ overnight. About 1.2” WE is forecast during the day, for 7-10” of dense snow, possibly with a period of snain/mixed precip between 4am and 10am. Overnight, the expectation is another 0.4” WE for 4-5” of higher-quality snow. Wind: SW 30-60 in the morning, W 40 in the afternoon, and WSW 20-30 overnight.

Tuesday starts cloudy and ends snowy. The snow level will be 1500′ early and will slowly rise to 4500′ overnight. No precip during the day. Snow starts around 11pm. About 0.4” WE is forecast overnight for about 3-4” of new. Wind: WSW 20-30 early, SW 15-35 in the afternoon, SW 30-50 overnight, and SW 20-35 after midnight.

Snow continues on Wednesday with the snow level around 4000′. About 10” is forecast for the 24 hour period with moderate wind. As of now, Thursday looks dry. Models start to diverge after that, so we’ll stop here. Happy riding! Be nice to the lifties!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
