It is snowing on Mt. Hood this morning, a nice change from the not-snow (aka rain) that we had yesterday. We’ll see on-and-off flurries today mixed in with some sunbreaks, followed by heavier snowfall after 10pm. The snow level today will be 3000′ this morning, 4500′ midday, and 3000′ or so overnight. We’ll see less than 1” of new during the day, followed by .7” water value (WV) tonight, for 6-7” of new snow. Wind today will be W 30 early, becoming SW 25 mid-morning, SW 15 in the afternoon, and S 10-15 tonight. Continued after the chart.

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast, continued…

Monday starts out with fresh snow on the ground and on-and-off flurries, or maybe even clear sky. The flurries increase after 4pm. The snow level will be 2000′ early, maybe rising a little during the day, and dropping to 1500′ overnight. We’ll see less than 1” during the day, followed by .1-.2” WV overnight, for 1-3” of additional accumulation. Wind on Monday will be a brisk W 30 early, staying in the W 20-25 range for much of the day.

Tuesday looks clear to start. High clouds move in mid-morning, and precip starts up around 4pm. The snow level Tuesday will be 1500′ early, rising to 2500′ with the arrival of the precip, and slowly rising to 5500′ by Wednesday morning as a much warmer air mass moves over the Northwest. This setup will likely make the Tuesday night snowfall quite dense; we’ll see 1.1” WV or so, and that’ll fall as 6-8” of wet snow. If we’re lucky, it’ll still be snowing Wednesday morning, but that won’t last long before we see a switch to rain. Wind on Tuesday will be SW 10 early, rising to SW 20-25 in the afternoon and WSW 30 after midnight.

Looks like we’ll see rain all day Wednesday, continuing into Thursday morning. As of right now, it looks like we’ll see 2-3” of rain, but we really need to wait and see the exact track of the River Atmospheric.

Gorge Wind Forecast

We’re seeing lingering west wind this morning driven by a westerly gradient of .06 (pdx-dls) and .08 (dls-psc). That’s giving us mid-20s out at Arlington and gusty 15-25 in the western Gorge. We’ll see westerlies continue through midday in the eastern Gorge. In the western Gorge, we’ll see gusty 20-23 or so from Steven’s Locks to The Dalles through 4pm. Steadiest conditions should be in the Rowena stretch of the river. Maybe Mosier too. Maybe not. Water temps is about 42 degrees.

Monday starts with light and variable wind and picks up to W 13-16 from Steven’s Locks to Mosier midday, with 22-25 from Rowena to Arlington in the afternoon. Tuesday looks light and variable to start with E 15-20 in the afternoon.

Random Morning Thoughts

I’ve been thinking a lot about our reactions to other people, and how we distinguish our real reactions from those based on our implicit memory system’s interpretation of a person based on past events in our lives. This came up for me in a very real way last week in reaction to an email I received, an email that sent my nervous system into a complete freakout. In the midst of the freakout, I felt very clear-headed, if that makes any sense. In other words, I was focused and certain. That means, I think, that my reaction was justified, real, and based on current relational facts, not the past.

In paying attention to this over the last week, I’ve noticed that my reactions based in current reality have that sense: clarity and focus, despite whatever the reaction is. When my reactions are based on the past, there’s a slight sense of wooziness, a lack of grounding, a fogginess or fuzziness to the interaction or reaction I’m having. It’s a bit of a trance state…

Maybe this is the same for you. See if you can notice it, just for fun. Spend some time around someone who puts you off for no known reason. See what your level of grounding is in their presence (and be nice to them, because running experiments on others without their consent isn’t all that ethical). Notice your level of clarity and focus. If you can learn to notice that trance state taking you over (it’s your lightning-fast implicit memory system at work protecting you, by the way), you can begin to spend more time right here, right now, without reacting based on your past. You might even find you really like that person you were reacting negatively too! You’ll make a new friend!

As a bonus, you’ll get to spend more time feeling focused and certain and grounded, and who doesn’t like that? Yeah! Have an awesome day!
