Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Gorge Wind Forecast (and Sauvie’s, Jones, the Coast…)

It’s a smoky start to the day here in the Gorge, and that’s a sign that the wind is coming from the east, even if it looks glassy on the river here in Hood River. Down in the western Gorge, you can expect 21-24 this morning at Rooster and 13-16 at Steven’s Locks. That wind won’t last long – by noon, it should be calm through the whole Gorge. Don’t expect that to last long either (this too shall pass?); we’ll see westerlies pick up to 15-18 by 5pm from Stevenson to Mosier, with the Rowena stretch joining in as well.

High pressure off the coast combines with a trough of low pressure in the PNW tomorrow for a solid day on the river. Expect 21-24 to start from Viento to Doug’s. We’ll see the wind pick up to 25-29 from Stevenson to Rufus by early afternoon with the strongest wind on the Rowena stretch of the river.

It’s the bi-annual summer pledge drive!
See above for details.

Tuesday starts off with 20-23 from Hood River to Mosier, but backs off to 12-15 in the afternoon as an upper low settles in off the coast. With that low pressure hanging off the coast for a few days, we’ll see a couple days of teens in the morning followed by gusty low twenties in the afternoon.

Coast (north/central/south). Today: 15-20/5-10/light, NW swell 6′ @ 10 seconds. Tomorrow: 5-10/10-15/20-25, NW 6 @ 11. Tuesday: 10-15/15-20/25-30, NW 5 @ 10.

Jones n’ Sauvie’s beta test forecast. Jones today, 21-24. Jones tomorrow, 17-21. Jones Tuesday, 16-10. Sauvie’s today, 4-7. Sauvie’s tomorrow, 7-10. Sauvie’s Tuesday, 10-13.

Random Morning Thoughts

DSC_0556 copy-2
Living in the Gorge, we use the Gorge as our gym. This morning, however, it’s pretty clear that Mother Nature has different plans for us. Sure, you could us the Gorge as your gym while the visibility is down to ½ mile from the smoke, but your lungs won’t appreciate that.

Maybe we can all take this smoky morning to reconnect with ourselves or our friends. If you’d normally go for a jog or a bike ride or a paddle, just sit your butt down with a cup of coffee instead. Don’t just do something – sit there!* Close your eyes. Look at your inner world. Say hello. It misses you! Ask yourself what’s alive in there today, and pay attention to it for a while. Just watch – don’t interfere. You could do that while practicing yoga – there’s a by-donation class at Yoga Samadhi at 9am…

Or maybe alone time doesn’t sound appealing (for an interesting morning, ask yourself why…). Call a friend you haven’t seen in a while and grab a cup of coffee together. Sure, you could chat on the phone, but then you won’t get a hug, and hugs are very, very important for your nervous system (unless you hate being touched, in which case, you can just stick with being in the same place as your friend!).

So… take this smoky morning as an opportunity to give your mind a rest and your soul some much-needed down town. Make it an awesome smoky morning. The Gorge-Gym returns with blue sky this afternoon.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Somewhere in the Northwest, maybe high up in elevation, there’s clear sky. Down here in the Gorge, there’s smoke. Lots of smoke. Expect the smoke to stick around through early afternoon, when a switch to westerly wind will blow the smoke away. Temps will be in the upper 40’s this morning and the upper 80’s this afternoon with light east wind early and moderate west wind late. Tomorrow starts off sunny with temps in the low 60’s. We’ll have mid 80’s in the afternoon with moderate wind. Expect temps in the upper 50’s Tuesday morning with moderate wind and temps in the mid 80’s Tuesday afternoon with light wind.

Road and Mountain Biking

I did a little reading on the interwebs yesterday about wildfire smoke, and apparently we shouldn’t be out exercising in it. So, perhaps you can save your bike ride for later today when the wind switches to westerly and the smoke is gone.
