Gorge Wind Forecast

It’s going to be a rough couple of days for the firefighters at the new Eagle Creek fire, as the wind switches around today and then turns stronger out of the east the next couple of days. For today, Sunday, we’ll have light and variable wind for the first couple hours as gradients sit at .00 across the Cascades. By late morning, as the heat low sits over the western half of the state, the wind will pick up to 15-20 out of the east, strongest near Cascade Locks, with 10-15 or so near Rooster and Viento. The GFS shifts the heat low right over the Cascades this afternoon, turning the wind light westerly: 10-13 between Cascade Locks and Hood River.

As of right now, the GFS is suggesting a light wind start to Monday. As the heat low sits right over the Willamette Valley in the afternoon, the easterlies will intensify: expect E 20-25 by late morning between Rooster Rock and Home Valley. After noon, we’ll have E 5-10 through the rest of the Gorge and slowly fading E 10-15 between RR and HV.

As of right now, the GFS is predicting strong easterlies on Monday. As a matter of fact, the forecast is stronger even compared to yesterday’s model run. We’re looking at E 25-30 near Rooster and 20-25 between Cascade Locks and Viento to start the day. The wind will pick up to 30-40 near Rooster and 30-35 near Cascade Locks and Home Valley by mid-morning with a slow fade to E 5 as you get closer to Hood River. The win d will fade Tuesday afternoon, turning westerly overnight.

This morning’s forecast for Wednesday starts with westerlies at 21-24 or so and gusty 25-29 in the afternoon, strongest between Cascade Locks and Hood River. Thursday looks like gusty 26-30 with a chance of thunderstorms and even some rain.

Random Morning Thoughts

I just got up to take care of something and realized that if I don’t send this out, I’m going to forget. Please think kind thoughts today for the folks who spent last night scared shitless above the new Eagle Creek fire. Also think kind thoughts for the people of west Cascade Locks who are currently evacuated from their homes. Thoughts may not help them, but your commitment to help later if the need arises will. Have an awesome day.

Gorge Weather Forecast

It’s a very smoky morning here in the Gorge, and there’s also ash falling from the sky. I’m thinking that maybe the air quality reading of 21 is WRONG! Despite the 60 degree temps, it’s a terrible morning to open your windows, meaning you’ll be relying on AC (if you have it) for the 98 degree weather and increased smoke this afternoon; expect light easterlies midday and light westerlies later. The air should clear some on Monday as the wind switches to easterly. Temps will be in the mid 60’s early and upper 90’s in the afternoon. Tuesday looks like Monday, but muggier.

White Sprinter Van of the Week

Road and Mountain Biking

Heads up: Mosier is testing out some new bike-friendly intersections from today on through the 9th. They’d really appreciate it if you’d go check them out and provide feedback: cityofmosier.com/feedback. In other news, all Kreps and SDS lands remain closed due to fire danger. Dethman Ridge Road and Erchk Hill are both closed at their west ends due to bridge rebuilding. To the best of my knowledge, everything else is open. Hydrate!

Upcoming Events

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

The Mt. Hood snow forecast is currently on vacation. It will stay on vacation until I deem it to be close enough to winter that we need a Mt. Hood snow forecast. Be safe out there on the snow this summer!

Have an awesome day today!
