Thank you for using this forecast. Like it? Find it useful? Support it (and me!) by sending some cash my way. Why should you keep doing this when you’re under a stay-at-home order? Because my bills don’t stop – I hope you’ll consider contributing even though the world has ground to a standstill. That’ll keep the forecast going through this crisis, and it’ll mean the forecast is here when we all emerge from our homes. What’s it cost to support me and get the email version? Not $99 a year. Nope. Not $49. Just $19.99 or more gets you a year. Click below to contribute. Thank you!!

Gorge Wind Forecast
Oregon and Washington are encouraging people to not travel more than 50 miles (not mph!) to access recreation, and all land managers and law enforcement are carefully watching to see if people maintain social distancing. If crowding happens, water access will be revoked. If you are local and lucky enough to have water access in your community, please do this: rig, play, leave. There is NO camping allowed at any of the river parks. Please don’t camp unlawfully; doing so risks access for everyone, including for people who just want to use the parks for a picnic. All hotels and short-term rentals are still closed in Hood River to non-essential travelers. Recreate and go home. If you live in a place that’s still under a stay at home order, stay home – follow the guidance of where you live, not where you want to go. Thank you!
Whew. That was a wild day on the river yesterday! At one point, Roosevelt was reading 47-70. That. Is. Windy. Nothing like that is in the forecast for the next week. On the contrary, we’ll have day after day of moderate to moderately strong westerlies. Just enough for mellow cruising on your favorite floating object.
Sunday starts with some lingering strong westerlies in the eastern Gorge. They’ll hold for a good bit of the day, fading when the sun really breaks through in the western half of the state. Expect morning wind at gusty 18-23 in the western Gorge with 25-29 east of Lyle. The wind will drop a few miles per hour in the eastern Gorge, but hold in the mid-twenties until mid-afternoon. After that, it’ll drop precipitously. The western Gorge also sees gradients drop in the afternoon, but the cross-Cascade temp gradient and offshore high pressure should keep the wind in the 18-22 range this afternoon. River flow is 370 kcfs (too much for the Rufus stretch, which maxes out around 325kcfs), and temp is 56 degrees.
Monday sees a trough of low pressure inland and building high pressure offshore. Morning westerlies start at 15-18 from Stevenson to Viento. By noon, we’ll have 21-24 from Stevenson to Mosier. Afternoon wind builds to 24-27 from Stevenson to Rufus. A weak weather impulse approaches on Tuesday from the NW. Although there won’t be much too it, it’ll probably decrease wind quality. Expect morning wind at 10-13 form Stevenson to Viento with 5-10 east of there and light westerlies east of The Dalles. The wind builds to gusty 24-27 in the afternoon from Stevenson to Doug’. The Hatchery and Swell will likely see less wind, perhaps gusty 19-22 after a short period of mid 20’s.
