Sunday. Rainbows, lightning, rain, and a ton of singletrack for May-gust.

DSC_2708
It’s a light and variable start to the day today, despite a westerly gradient of .05 (pdx-dls). As high pressure sits over us for much of the day, we’ll see light and variable wind. That means it’s a perfect day for no-wind sports. Standup paddling, for example. If you don’t have your own gear, head to the Event Site and find the Big Winds folks – they have free demos and free lessons happening at various times today. Continued after the chart.

Today’s Gorge Wind – these are ranges for the average speed, not a predicted wind range. =)

Gorge Wind forecast, continued…

Back to the wind, a weather system approaches in the afternoon, likely triggering thunderstorms. That said, models do suggest we’ll see west wind at 13-16 from Stevenson to The Dalles starting around 5pm, with the wind increasing into the evening and overnight. Honestly, the likelihood of thunderstorms makes this a very difficult day to predict. Keep an eye on the storm tracker and plan accordingly.

Tomorrow’s wind is more predictable. A low pressure system in the desert combines with a weather system moving through and offshore high pressure for strong wind right off the bat. Temps will drop 10-15 degrees from today’s highs. Now, it’s not a good sign for steadiness or reliability if there are weather dynamics happening (things moving, right?). However, models say we’ll get 26-30+ tomorrow from the edge of the low clouds (Mosier, maybe?) all the way to Threemile. I think that sounds reasonable, given the temp drop and the decrease in thunderstorm chances. The period of strongest wind looks to be 11am to 3pm, with 30+ possible from Lyle to Rufus.

We’ll see a deep marine layer Tuesday morning with possible showers near Hood River. That will shift the wind eastward. Expect 13-16 to start, picking up to gusty 20-23 in the afternoon from Mosier to Arlington. Wednesday looks light and variable early with W 10-13 late in the day.

Random Morning Thoughts

When I’m desperate for something to write in the Meadows snow report, I look at the list of today’s holidays. Inspiration was lacking here this morning, so I looked. Today is “Save your hearing day”. I got a chuckle from that; I’m one of those people who drives with the music at max, singing along at the top of my lungs (and I can’t carry a tune). I find this relaxing – loud music makes my troubles go away.

Yes, it’s important to save your hearing, but sometimes it’s also important to just drown out the world. I encourage mindfulness. I do that a lot. And now I’m going to encourage the opposite, kinda.

Once in a while, turn up the music to max, whatever that means for you. Pump up the volume and dance. Push yourself beyond your perceived limits. Ride for so long your self disappears in a haze of exhaustion. Run until your thoughts are gone. Eat ice cream until you feel better. Do what it is you do to drown out the world.

But do it mindfully. Say to yourself, “I’m going to drown it all out for now, and then I’ll go back to real life.” ‘Cuz sometimes it’s important to chill the f**k out, to drown it all out, and to step away from your troubles. Once in a while, give yourself permission to run away from it all. You might just find a new perspective when you return.

Gorge Weather Forecast

Full-sky cloud coverage is how we’re starting today, with high clouds from an offshore low pressure system. Expect those clouds to continue and for convection to join the mix this afternoon. There’s a very good chance of thunder, especially near Mt. Hood and in the eastern Gorge. Temps today will be near 60 early and in the mid 80’s this afternoon. The wind will be light, there’s a decent chance of rain, and there’s an 8% chance of rainbows. We might even see thunder and lightning tonight!

There’s a decent chance we’ll see a few thunderstorms tomorrow morning, followed by low clouds and sprinkles in the western Gorge. Temps will be near 60 in the morning and will only climb to the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Strong wind. 87% chance of rainbows.

Tuesday looks partly clouds with sprinkles possible. Temps will be in the mid 50’s early and the upper 60’s in the afternoon. Light to moderate wind. 33% chance of rainbows.

Road and Mountain Biking

I went out and inspected trails for you yesterday. You’re welcome. Everything from Bennett Pass down to Sawtooth Pub is open, and most of it is already dry, including Gunsight. Luckily, there’s a very good chance we’ll get some rain (and hopefully not lightning) between now and Tuesday. In road biking news, today looks good at least until the thunder starts this afternoon, and Wednesday also looks like a light wind day.

Upcoming Events

Today’s good standup paddling weather, and that’s good timing because Big Winds has free standup paddle demos and lessons at the Event Site.

Mt. Adams Parks n’ Rec has a fundraiser run at Rheingarten Park today, there’s pickup touch rugby at 3pm in Mosier, Ping Pong at 5:30 at the Hood River Armory, and two Community Yoga classes: 9am at Yoga Samadhi and 6pm at Root Down Yoga.

Coming up next weekend, local nonprofit Anson’s Bike Buddies is having a bike drive in The Dalles. If you live in that area and have an old bike you’re not using, bring it by the Crates Building parking lot between 10 and 3 next Saturday, and Anson will get it to a local kid who needs a bike.

Speaking of community sports, registration is now open for the summer Gorge Ultimate Frisbee league. It’s $40 for the summer. Click through to get signed up. One last thing: if you are thinking of doing the Mt. Adams Country Bicycle Tour, get signed up now because the price goes up on June 1st.
