Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi everyone! Models are honing in on the possibility of decent westerlies on Tuesday afternoon, but there are some caveats we’ll discuss…. In the meantime, Sunday starts light and variable. Easterlies pick up to 15mph from Iwash (Rooster) Rock to Stevenson for a few hours this afternoon. River flow yesterday was 76-128kcfs, river temp is 57F, and high temp forecast is 58F. Monday starts light and variable. Westerlies pick up to gusty 14-17 or a bit more east of The Dalles in the afternoon.

On Tuesday, a low moves inland and high pressures attempts to dominate the offshore waters. The deterministic GFS currently starts the day with gusty 22-26 from Stevenson to Swell and gusty 19-23 out east. It then fires up a brief (several hours) period of gusty 26-30 from Avery to Threemile. Caveats: 1) the forecast is likely to change; 2) the ensembles are NOT as optimistic – they’re calling for mid 20’s, not upper 20’s or low 30’s; 3) to catch the strongest wind out east, you’ll probably just have to trust the forecast and drive pre-emptively – the wind is only forecast to last a few hours. High temp: low 50’s. Next up: calm wind on Wednesday, rain Thursday, and total chaos in the models beyond that. Best of luck to you and me and all of us. Hoping for a fun day Tuesday!

Mt. Hood Snow Forecast – intermittent forecasts until ski season

Looks like we have at least some snow coming this week. Whether it’ll be enough for another round of groomed Nordic skiing is up for debate, but there should be enough for skinning around in some dense fresh snow at elevation. Sunday, however, looks a little too warm. The snow level will be 5500′ this morning, 6000′ this evening, and 5500′ after midnight. A trace of rain is forecast this afternoon followed by 0.6” water equivalent (WE) of mixed precip overnight. 850mb temps look rather warm, so snow is unlikely at 5000′, but we could see up to 6” way up high. Wind: WSW 15 in the morning becoming SW 10-15 from the afternoon on through the evening.

Temps start to fall Monday, but it’ll still be marginal for snow at 5000′. The day starts with the snow level at 5500′. It falls to 5000′ late afternoon and perhaps as low as 4500′ after midnight. About 0.3” WE is possible during the day. That’s probably going to be snain or mixed precip. Overnight, up to 1.4” WE is forecast. That’ll be a foot above 6000′ and perhaps 5-8” at 5000′. Wind: SW 10 in the morning, SW 30-50 in the afternoon, and WNW 35-40 after midnight.

Snow accumulation ramps up on Tuesday as 850mb temps fall from +1C to -2C by the afternoon and -3C after midnight. About 0.6” WE is forecast during the day. Just a trace is forecast overnight. Call that 6-7” new at 5000′; orographics will aid the accumulation and pile the snow up on leeward slopes. Wind will be WNW 35-40 in the morning, W 45 in the afternoon, and W 25 after midnight.

Wednesday looks dry and cooler with the free air freezing level at 2500′. The wind drops from W 25 in the morning to light/variable in the afternoon. Another round of snow is forecast sometime Thursday, probably later in the day. After that, models diverge wildly. We’ll leave it there. Fingers crossed for some snow sliding this week! Enjoy!

Cycling

Mud. Don’t. You’ll damage the trails. Ride gravel. Ride your trainer. Build trails. There are trail builders seeking extra hands on seven additional miles of trail on Whoopdee. Contact HRATS for more information. See events section of this report for upcoming trail work parties on various trail systems. Don’t ride in the mud, or you’ll do permanent damage. Also, people will have to fix your messes rather than building you new trails. Just don’t, okay?No trails have closed yet due to snow, but we’re likely to lose the highest-elevation trails, at least temporarily, on the 25th . If you’re parking at Post Canyon, you will need a parking pass. Those can be purchased at many local shops or online.
