Sunday. Rain! Marathon! Yoga!

The easterlies are ripping this morning as an offshore upper level low has the gradient at E .22. That’s enough that Rooster’s just over 40mph and Steven’s Locks, usually a late starter, is already in the upper 20’s. If you want it, get on it. Although the wind will continue all day long, rain after…

Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

Gorge Wind Forecast, continued…

The wind will switch to westerly after sunset tonight, giving up W 23-26 east of Hood River for the Dawn Patrol session tomorrow. The wind should last through early afternoon between Mosier and Arlington, fading late in the day as high pressure builds in. Hood River is a tossup tomorrow: if it’s under the clouds, you can expect gusty 12-15. If it’s in the sun, expect 23-26. It’s probably going to be the former, but hey, at least that means you’re likely to see a morning rainbow or two!

Random Morning Thoughts

I woke up to the dark this morning. 6:30. No light in the sky. The first thought in my mind was, “How cozy!”

The dark is coming, my friends. In just a week, we will turn the clocks back. Our evenings will become a time of headlamps, headlights, light bulbs and candles.

As always, we’ll grumble and bemoan the loss of our after-work sunlight.

There’s an alternative to this darkness frustration, and no, it’s not the happy lamp, electricity or getting up earlier. Turn toward the dark. Accept it. Embrace it. Realize that you no longer have to fight to sneak in an activity before the sun goes down. It’s no longer possible when the clocks fall back.

Join forces with the dark. Get books from the library. Renew your Netflix. Stock up on tea, cocoa and popcorn (it’s what’s for dinner). Cuddle up with your cat, dog or partner, and sink into the dark. The Dark is Rising and acceptance will turn it back. Now, go order that book, a new blankie, and a box of cocoa and have an awesome day!

Road and Mountain Biking

The weather models say it’s going to rain starting around 1pm today, so you’ll want to be off the roads and off the trails by then, cuddled up with a good book in front of a warm fire. The tack alert for Post Canyon kicks into effect tomorrow afternoon through Tuesday. In road biking news, tomorrow looks rather windy, but Tuesday looks sunny with easterlies, so that’s your pick for a big ride this week.

Upcoming Events

Today is Sunday, October 25th, and that means today is the Columbia Gorge Marathon. Today is not the day to ride your bike on the Twin Tunnels trail. Instead, you may want to consider one of the three free yoga classes today: 9am at Yoga Samadhi, 4pm at Pure Yoga, or 6pm at Root Down Yoga. There’s also pickup touch rugby at the Mosier School at 3pm and ping pong at the Hood River Armory at 5:30pm.

Have an awesome day today!
