Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Forecast

Rain, glorious rain! It soaks the snowpack today and consolidates it. Stay out of the backcountry; NWAC has issued an avalanche warning for extremely dangerous conditions. The mountain sees rain all day Sunday and into midday Monday before a switch to snow. Dry weather returns on Tuesday and sticks around for a couple days.

On Sunday, expect rain all day. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 8500′ in the afternoon, and 8000′ overnight. About 0.9” rain falls in the day. That’s followed by 1.6” rain overnight. Wind: W 30 in the morning builds to W 50 in the afternoon. It turns to WSW 35-50 overnight.

Monday starts with rain. A very strong cold front swings through midday and smashes the snow level down below 2000′. The snow level starts at 8000′, falls to 6500′ by 1pm, drops to 2000′ in the afternoon, and falls as low as 1000′ overnight. A trace of rain falls before this cold front arrives. About 0.5” water equivalent (WE) drops as the front hits. That starts at rain and switches to snow, for 2-3” of new. Another 0.8” WE falls overnight, for 7-9” of new snow. Wind: WSW 35-50 in the morning, SW25-50 midday, NW 40-45 in the evening and overnight.

Tuesday starts windy with flurries and ends with sunshine. The snow level will be about 1000′ all day. Just a trace of snow falls, and probably only in the morning. After that: SUN! Wind: NW 40-45 during the day, NNW 30-35 in the afternoon, and NE 20 after midnight. Wednesday and Thursday look dry, sunny, and above freezing. The next round of precip is forecast for midday on Christmas.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Light westerlies on Sunday morning turn calm in the afternoon. River flow is 84,600cfs, temp is 44 degrees, and high temp forecast is 50. Watch for debris in the river after heavy rain last night. Monday starts with W 15-20 east of The Dalles and west of Hood River. There will be a period of gusty mid-20’s early afternoon followed by W 30-40 from Stevenson to Boardman after 1pm. Again, watch for debris in the river. Tuesday starts with gusty 23-26 from Stevenson to Boardman. That lasts until early afternoon. After that, high pressure moves inland and drops the wind to W 10-13 in the western Gorge and shuts it off in the eastern Gorge.

Coast, Jones, Sauvie’s

As needed until next spring and summer.

Cycling

Volunteers needed! Columbia Area Mountain Bike Advocate (CAMBA) is doing small projects at the Syncline this winter: treadwork and trail maintenance. Show that we care and want to protect it! Due to COVID restrictions, work party numbers are limited, so if you can help, contact Ann 509-637-three seven one three. Hikers, runners, mountain bikers, and sightseers all welcome! Do be aware of the possibility of freeze-thaw (muddy) conditions, especially on trails that are not under a tree canopy. Do not ride if it was below freezing last night and is above freezing when you want to ride. The soil structure will be liquefied, and you will do permanent damage to trails. Consider riding gravel roads instead.
