Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning skiers and snowboarders and very sad Nordic skiers. Nordic folks: Bachelor does have Nordic trails groomed and ready for you. Teacup and Meadows Nordic are still waiting for snow. On to the weather forecast… Well, let’s start with the percentiles through January 8th: 10th percentile: 4” between now and then. 50th percentile: 13”. 90th percentile: 25”. Generally speaking, the GFS and Euro indicate colder weather starting around the 3rd or 4th of January. That’s not as good as if it started today, but it’s better than staying warm forever. In the meantime… there’s some rain forecast for the slopes.

But not for Sunday. Expect a cloudy day with hardpack/packed powder conditions and just a few flurries in the afternoon or overnight. The snow level will be around 4500′ today with temps at 5000′ slowly rising to +2C overnight. Wind: SW 15-25 early rising to SW 20-30 mid-morning and holding through the evening. The wind drops to SSW 10-20 overnight.

Monday starts off with a few flurries and quickly turns warm and rainy. A little snow is possible after midnight, but not much moisture will remain at that point. The snow level will be 4500′ early, 6000′ by sunrise, 8000′ in the afternoon, 5500′ overnight, and back to 4000′ or so after midnight. During the day, about 0.5” rain is forecast followed by 0.4” mixed precip. A couple inches of snow might fall above 6000′, but this will mostly be too wet to accumulate. Overnight, perhaps 0.1” water equivalent (WE) falls as snow, for an inch of new. Wind: SSW 10-20 early rises to SW 30-50 in the afternoon and SW 30-45 after midnight.

Tuesday will be intermittently high overcast. A little rain is possible overnight. The snow level will be 4000′ in the morning, 7000′ in the afternoon, and 10,000′ after midnight. A trace of rain, or perhaps 0.1” is possible in the afternoon. About 0.2” is forecast overnight. Wind: SW 25-45 early, W 30 mid-morning, S 5-15 in the afternoon, and S 20-30 after midnight. Relatively warm, relatively cloudy weather is forecast for Wednesday. We’ll leave it there for now. Get it today – it’s the nicest snow you’ll see for the next several days!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! It’s all easterlies, all the time, as far as the eye can see. There will be some precipitation tossed in there, so not all those east winds will be awesome. Sunday starts with pressures of 30.13/30.30/30.34 for gradients of E 0.17 and 0.04. Easterlies were 45ish at Iwash, 30 at Stevenson, and 19 at Viento to start the day. The wind will drop fast. By late morning, we’ll have 30-35 at Iwash, 20-25 at Stevenson, and 15 at Viento. That’ll hold for the rest of the day. River flow yesterday was 96-127kcfs, river temp is 45.7F, and high temp forecast is 37F under high overcast sky.

Monday’s wind looks awesome, but lots of rain will accompany it. That’s not so awesome. Expect 45-50 all day at Iwash (Rooster) with 35 at Stevenson all day. High temp: mid to upper 30’s with rain, lots of rain, all day long. Tuesday starts with 15 at Stevenson and light/variable wind at Iwash (Rooster). The wind rises to 30-35 at both in the afternoon. High temp: 42F under high overcast sky. Models hint at stronger wind Wednesday morning with a quick fade in the afternoon. Some sort of east wind continues through at least Friday. Hopefully I’ll be back out there with you by then! Enjoy!
