Mt. Hood Snow Forecast

Good morning, skiers, snowboards, and very happy Nordic skiers. Teacup had the big cats out grooming, and it’s game on for Nordic now! Meadows: sometime next week. For today, we’ll have a little lingering snowfall before the sky (probably) clears. Reasonable snowfall on Monday gives way to a massive and chaotic system Monday night through Wednesday. After that? Complete uncertainty.

For Sunday, we’ll have a parked out mountain. Weather-wise, expect lingering morning flurries followed by sunshine or at least sun breaks this afternoon and snow overnight. The snow level will be 1500-2000′ this morning and 1500′ or less this afternoon. We’re expecting an inch or two today followed by a trace overnight. Wind: NW 25-35 this morning, NW 15-20 this afternoon, and W 10-15 after midnight.

Monday will be snowy all day. Overnight, the snow level rises as 850mb (5000′) temps climb to +2C. The snow level will be 1500′ early, 5000′ in the afternoon, and 6000′ overnight. About 0.6” water equivalent (WE) falls during the day. Call that 6-7” increasingly dense new snow. Overnight, 1.0” WE is forecast. Some of this may fall as snain or mixed precip. Above 6000′: 8-12”. Wind on Monday will be W 10-15 early, W 40 in the afternoon, and it’ll build to WSW 75 overnight. Whoa.

Tuesday’s going to be a complete and total blizzard on the mountain, and it seems unlikely lifts will be running if the forecast holds. The snow level will be 6000′ to start the day and will quickly drop to 2000′ by sunrise before falling to 1500′ in the afternoon. About 1.5” WE is forecast during the day for 18” of new. Overnight, another 1.3” WE is forecast. That’s 13-16” dry powder. But wait. Add in the very strong west wind, and we have orographic enhancement of the snow and damage to the snow quality. Add 20-30% to the totals and pack it into windslab or sastrugi in many areas. Wind: WSW 75 early, W 55-60 around dawn, W 60 in the afternoon, and WNW 50 overnight. That’s definitely right on the edge of complete shutdown territory all day long.

Snow and wind continue on Wednesday. The snow level will be 1000-1500′ all day and will fall to 0-1000′ under clearing sky overnight. We’re expecting at least 0.7” WE during the day. Call it 7-11” powder with the orographic assistance. Overnight: just 1-3” more. Wind: WNW 50 early, WNW 25-40 mid-morning, NW 25 in the afternoon and NW 35 overnight. That early morning wind and direction are right on the edge of affecting at least some lifts. As of this morning, Thursday looks cold and windy with just a little snow. After that, models are all over the place to the extent that I can’t even guess at the forecast. Enjoy this week. It’s going to be amazing!

Gorge Wind Forecast

Hi friends! Fun day on the river yesterday, and there’s more of that west wind on the way next week. For today, Sunday, we start with pressures of 30.02/29.93/29.91 for gradients of 0.09 and 0.02. That implies westerlies at 17-20 or so, but they may just be 14-17. Location: Stevenson to Mosier. After noon, models suggest the wind will drop to 11-14. River flow yesterday was 100-122 kcfs, river temp is 44F, and high temp forecast is 42F under partly cloudy sky.

Monday will be quite rainy and not all that windy. Expect calm wind to start. Easterlies rise to 20-25 at Iwash (Rooster) Rock and 15 at Stevenson before falling to 15 at both in the afternoon. High temp: 42F. Tuesday. Oh yeah! West wind in the mid 20’s in the western Gorge with 30-35+ out east. We’ll keep refining this. Ensembles are pretty much all in. Good sign for this: it’s likely to be windy enough to shut down the lifts at the ski resorts. My b-day party celebration is almost certainly at Rufus on Tuesday. Bonus day: models hold on to the strong west wind for the eastern Gorge Wednesday morning. Enjoy!
