Meet your forecaster: Temira

For almost 30 years, Temira (they/them) has been making the most of the Gorge: riding river swell, shredding powder, and cycling all the gravel and pavement and trails. This is Temira’s playground, their gym… their life’s work.

This passion led Temira to take a vow: In 2006, Temira decided to provide the most accurate, hyper-local weather forecasts possible. Today, Temira’s forecasts have become an essential resource for thousands of skiers, snowboarders, wind sports enthusiasts and Gorge commuters. With Temira’s guidance, you can plan ahead, time your sessions perfectly, and just plain have more fun! But the story doesn’t end there.

There’s “Temira’s Awesome Travel Advisory Service” and “Valuable Advice for Gardeners Inhabiting Neighboring Areas” – the Gorge’s premier microclimate forecast and gardening information. When winter storms, extreme heat, hail, or avalanches on SR-14 and I-84 threaten, TATAS keeps everyone and their tomatoes and giant pumpkins and cash crops safe.

Temira’s relentless efforts keep the forecasts flowing. But it ain’t easy: each forecast takes a couple of hours. That’s where you come in. By contributing, you’re not just supporting Temira’s passion project – you’re investing in the safety and well-being of the entire Gorge community. Your financial support ensures these essential forecasts remain accessible to all, free of charge.

So please take a moment to click one of the buttons below. Donate $19.99 or more (how much does this forecast enhance your life?) and get the email in your inbox. Or just contribute enough for a cup or pound of coffee. I need coffee! Every contribution, no matter the amount, makes a difference. Help me keep this labor of love alive, so we can all commute safely, play in the river, and shred Mt. Hood with the best weather forecasts possible. Thank you!

Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

Sunday started out very wet on Mt. Hood. Rainfall rate: over 1/4” per hour. Wow. Rainfall will continue all day, might be mixed with wet snowflakes this afternoon, and will rain all night. The snow level will be 8000′ early, 5500′ in the afternoon, and 6000′-6500′ overnight. Precip: 1.4” rain during the day, possibly mixed with snow in the afternoon. No accumulation. 1.1” rain overnight. Wind: WSW 40+ early, W 35 mid-morning, SW 20 in the afternoon, and SW 30+ overnight.

Monday daytime looks showery and Monday evening brings snow showers. The snow level will be 6500′ early, 5000′ in the evening, and 3500′ after midnight. About 0.2” water value (WV) falls as rain during the day. 0.2” WV falls as snow overnight, for 1-2”. Wind: SW 30+ early, SW 15 in the afternoon, W 15 in the evening, and WNW 25 after midnight.

Strong NW wind on Tuesday results in moderate orographic snowfall. The snow level will be 3500′ early, 4000′ midday, and 2000′ after midnight. Precip: 0.4” WV during the day, for 4-5” of new. 0.1” WV overnight, for an inch of new. That said, with very strong NW wind, we could see double or triple those snowfall amounts. Wind: WNW 25 early, NW 40 in the afternoon, NW 35 overnight.

Wednesday looks very snowy. The snow level will be 2000′ early, 3500′ in the afternoon, and as low as 1500′ overnight. About 0.8” WV falls during the day, for 8-10” of new snow. Another 0.7” WV falls overnight, for 7-9” of new. Those extended ranges reflect the additional of orographic effects: NW 35 in the morning, WNW 30 in the afternoon, WNW 20 overnight. Several inches of snow fall on Thursday morning before warmer weather arrives with a brief break in precip Thursday afternoon.

Gorge Wind

Offshore low pressure systems over the next couple of days result in back-and-forth gusty wind. Offshore high pressure builds on Tuesday and is accompanied by inland low pressure for a ginormous westerly day to start windsport season. Speaking of windsports, the CGWA is now the CGW2 – Columbia Gorge Wind and Water Association, representing ALL the wind-powered sportspeople. If you are in that category, join and support improved river access!

For Sunday, we start light and variable. As a low pressure system moves inland, the wind picks up out of the west. We’ll have gusty 23-26 from The Dalles to Arlington for a few hours midday before the rain returns and the wind goes calm. The western Gorge will see gusty 10-13.

Monday starts off light and variable. Not much happens during the day. Afternoon westerlies pick up to 7-11 out of the west from Stevenson to Arlington. High pressure builds offshore overnight.

Models agree on a Classic Gorge Setup for Tuesday. OPENING DAY! Rain in the western Gorge could shift the wind east of Swell – you’ll want to be east of the low clouds for the strongest, steadiest wind. By 11am, we’ll have steady westerlies at 30-35 from the cloud line all the way east to Arlington, maybe Threemile. With all the rain we’ll have had prior to this wind, there will likely be a lot of debris in the river. Be careful out there, and ride with a buddy. Watch the river flow too – it was 194kcfs on Sunday, perfect for Rufus, where there might just be less floating debris. River temp is 47 degrees. Looking at Wednesday, models like the idea of gusty 23-26 east of Mosier.

Road and Mountain Biking

ATTENTION: the cows are out on Hospital Hill, and people have still been taking dogs on their hikes and bikes. STOP! I received an email from the Kreps asking me to remind folks that dogs are not allowed on Hospital Hill between March 20th and July 1st. Cows or no cows, dogs are not allowed. We use that land due to the generosity of the Kreps family. When you go against their wishes, 1) you’re being a selfish butthead and 2) you endanger access for others. Please, leave your dogs at home! Other news: snow-free trails include Post from Mitchell Ridge down, Whoopdee (too muddy), and Syncline. All trails will be too wet to ride starting today – if you ride muddy trails, you’ll damage them. Let them dry out, and trail volunteers can build new trails rather than fixing damage you caused. Thank you!
