Mt. Hood Weather Forecast

La Nina continues to deliver for the extended forecast. Cold and wet is what we’ll get with either powder skiing or excellent packed powder groom!

Sunday’s starting off with light and fluffy powder. The snow level, as you may have noticed, is sea level. We’ll see about 0.2-0.3” water equivalent (WE) very dry snow today, for 3-5” new. Another 0.1” WE is forecast tonight for 1-2” more. Wind: W 35-40 this morning, WNW 35-40 midday, W 20 in the afternoon, and SW 5-10 tonight.

Monday starts clear and cold and doesn’t turn cloudy until after the sun sets. A trace of snow is possible overnight. The snow level will be sea level with slopeside temps near 0F all day. Wind: thankfully light, with SW 5-10 in the morning, W 10 in the afternoon, and SSW 10 overnight.

Tuesday starts cloudy and frigid, and adds a few snowflakes. Clear sky returns in the afternoon and sticks around all night. The snow/freezing level will be sea level. No accumulation. Wind: SSW 5-10 for the first half of the day. E 20 in the afternoon and evening. Wednesday looks sunny and frigid in the morning and sunny and cold in the afternoon. Wind: E 20 becoming W 25 overnight.

The next weather system arrives midday (or perhaps later) on Thursday and sticks around through Friday. Details are not yet clear, but the precip should come in as snow. Long-range models are calling for 6-8” WE over the next couple of weeks for another 6-8 feet of snow on top of our already deep snowpack. That’s great news. Enjoy your Sunday!

Note on wind speeds. Different wind directions are experienced in different ways on Mt. Hood. For example, west wind at 50mph will hit the slopes and exposed ridges at W 50. SW 50 may hit the ridges at SW 50, but will likely only be SW 20 below tree line. Hence the ranges for wind. Depends where you are on the mountain. Hopefully that helps clarify.

Gorge Wind Forecast

Westerlies are forecast today along with cold weather. The far western Gorge starts with W 10-15. We then see 10-13 from Stevenson to Lyle with 18-22 from Rowena to Rufus. After 2pm, the wind turns light, and then it turns easterly overnight. River flow is 94,300cfs, river temp is 43F, and high temp forecast is 32F. Monday starts with E 15-20, goes calm, and then goes light and variable. High temp: 26F. Easterlies build overnight to 20-25 by Tuesday morning and 30-35 by Tuesday afternoon. High temp: 27F.

Coast, Jones, Coast

Done until spring, unless there’s an obvious Coast or Sauvie’s or Jones day.

Hood River Weather Forecast

Cycling

FREEZE-THAW ALERT: if you notice that temps were below freezing last night and will be above freezing today, don’t ride any trail that’s not under a tree canopy. If you do so, you WILL do significant damage. DON’T DO IT! Plentiful rain recently means most tree-covered trails are muddy. Please don’t ride them either. If you do, you’ll be doing significant and possibly permanent damage. No really, please don’t. There are lots of gravel roads and lots of pavement you can ride instead. Enjoy!

Local Events

Please let me know about events. I often only hear about them if you folx let me know!

Ferment’s Tuesday night 4-mile walk/run is back. Meet there at 6pm. At 7:15am on Wednesdays, there’s a run from the White Salmon Bakery. There’s a night-lit shop mountain bike ride at Syncline on Tuesday evenings at 5:45pm.
